Thursday, JULY 28, at NOON
Our History Hunters event this month is a special, wonderful one! In conjunction with the Wabash Carnegie Public Library, the Wabash County Historical Society, and the Honeywell House, James Alexander Thom, a popular author of historical novels, will be here to speak. He is the author of The Red Heart, Follow the River, and Panther in the Sky, among many other books. He and his wife, Dark Rain, will talk about Frances Slocum and the experiences of other captives of Native Americans. Dark Rain is the Water Panther Clan Mother of the East of the River Shawnee of Ohio.
This event will be at 12 noon in our multi-purpose room. We are almost full already, so PLEASE CALL 260.563.9070 to make a reservation soon if you plan on attending!
Additional Event with Mr. Thom! He will also speak at 6:30 pm in the Honeywell Room at the Honeywell Center . During the evening speech, he will explain his research methods, how he chooses his subjects, and a bit about some of his books. No reservations are required for this event.
(Mr. Thom’s mother was from Wabash . He remembers attending a funeral here at which the entire honor guard was made up of Civil War veterans. I can’t wait to hear more from him about this.)
We have paperback copies of The Red Heart and Follow the River in the museum gift shop. (Now there is a good way to spend a hot afternoon—reading!)
Saturday July 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Oh, we are excited about this summer’s Family Fun Day! Our theme is “ Wabash County in 1812.” We have scheduled River Rogue Pirates, a Cannon Crew, and a Silhouette Cutter. We will have a special demonstration of a Spinning Wheel and a display of 1812-replica clothing. A local arrowhead expert is bringing in his large collection of arrowheads. Indian Life and Military Camp Life will be explained by re-enactors. And, if the weather permits, we will have special activities outside too—tug-o-war, candle-making and a wood-carving demonstration.
Please note the special activities are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The entire museum, of course, will be open until 4 pm. Admission is free for members or with a paid daily admission.
This Family Fun Day is sponsored by:

Historic Harleys: The Antique Motorcycles of Brandt’s Harley-Davidson
For those of you who ride, you’ll fall in love with these old-time beauties. For those of you (like me) who aren’t as familiar with motorcycles, you’ll love the history and stories that go along with each one. You’ll see the craftsmanship that makes Harley-Davidson more than a premium brand. If you haven’t seen the exhibit yet, don’t wait any longer! Although the exhibit is here until January 8, if you come now, you just might fall in love so deeply you’ll want to buy your own HOG and spend the rest of the summer out riding!
Something New in the Gift Shop
I have always admired Whetstone Woodenware when I’ve run across it at places like the Indiana Historical Society, Williamsburg , and Whetstone shop at Winona Lake . Now the Wabash County Historical Museum carries their hand-crafted wooden items too! We have a great selection of wooden spoons, cutting boards, spreaders, biscuit cutters, etc. These items make great hostess gifts. Stop by and have a look. There is no entrance fee to the gift shop!
Hope to see you at the museum soon…and often!
