Douglas Myers, executive director of the Zoological Society of San Diego, has been elected chair of the board of directors for the American Association of Museums (AAM). Myers will assume this position at the AAM Annual Meeting and MuseumExpo™ in Los Angeles May 23. AAM is the largest museum service organization in the world, encompassing nearly 20,000 members representing all types of museums: art, history, children's, natural history, science and technology centers, historic sites, zoos, aquariums and public and botanic gardens.
"AAM and its members are privileged to have Myers at the helm of our board for the next two years," said AAM president Ford W. Bell. "His wisdom and experience in guiding one of the country's great institutions will be integral to AAM's future success."
Myers assumes the chairmanship from Carl Nold, chief executive officer of Historic New England, who has served in that capacity since April 2008.
"These are exciting times at AAM, and I am proud to serve this vital organization," Myers said. "Under Carl Nold's leadership, AAM has developed a new strategic plan and vision that clearly defines its goals for the future. All of us are eager to implement this plan so that AAM may better support the wide-ranging museum community."
Myers has been chief executive officer for the Zoological Society of San Diego since 1985. During this time he has moved forward the global conservation efforts for the organization; securing a long-term giant panda loan with China, launching a cross border release program with California condors in Mexico and overseeing a collaborative effort with the country of Abu Dhabi to support the Al Ain Zoo. Myers came to the Zoological Society of San Diego in 1982 as general manager for the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park.
In addition to his work with the San Diego Zoo, Myers has been active in the museum world; serving as a member of the National Institute of Museum Library Services, the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership, the Central Balboa Park Association and as a past member of the Advisory Council of the Museum Trustee Association. He is also a current member of the Rotary Club of San Diego, the California Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the Conservation Breeding Specialists Group Steering Committee, and is a fellow of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
The 100-acre San Diego Zoo is dedicated to the conservation of endangered species and their habitats. The organization focuses on conservation and research work around the globe, educates millions of individuals a year about wildlife and maintains accredited horticultural, animal, library and photo collections. The Zoo also manages the 1,800-acre San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park, which includes a 900-acre native species reserve, and the San Diego Zoo's Institute for Conservation Research. The important conservation and science work of these entities is supported in part by The Foundation of the Zoological Society of San Diego.
Adorable addition to the Tampa park can be viewed by guests in Jambo Junction
TAMPA, Fla. (May 17, 2010) – Busch Gardens Tampa Bay welcomed two endangered baby red-ruffed lemurs on April 21. The babies can be viewed by guests in Jambo Junction, where they reside with their mother and father, Maditra and Bozeny.
The babies are the first lemurs to be born at Jambo Junction, home to the parks’ animal ambassadors, since Maditra and Bozeny arrived as babies three years ago. Lemurs are a species of primate, and reach sexual maturity between 2 and 3 years old.
The sex of the babies has yet to be determined, but they are developing well overall, according to trainers. They are getting braver each day, and exploring their habitat under the watchful eye of Mom and Dad. They currently weigh about 300 grams or a little more than half a pound; lemurs average about 80 grams, or .17 of a pound, at birth. They grow to be about 8 to 10 pounds.
All species of lemurs are native to the island of Madagascar. Red-ruffed lemurs are one of nearly about 50 lemur species. Busch Gardens is home to five lemur species. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service considers all lemurs endangered. Lemurs are endangered largely due to habitat destruction. Their forests are destroyed for their wood and to grow agricultural crops.
Lemurs play an important role in the ecology of Madagascar as seed dispersers. The seeds can then grow into new plants, which is important since the forests of Madagascar are being destroyed at a very high rate. However, they cannot disperse enough seeds to match the rate of forest destruction.
The SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund is actively working with groups in the wild to save endangered or threatened species, such as lemurs. The non-profit, private charitable foundation is committed to supporting wildlife and habitat conservation, research, education and animal rescue programs worldwide. Since its inception in 2004, the Fund has donated more than $6 million to more than 500 projects around the world. For more on the Fund, visit SWBG-ConservationFund.org.

Diamondback stands 230 feet at its highest point with a first drop of 215 feet at a 74-degree angle. Riders snake their way around 5,282 feet of steel track at speeds up to 80 miles per hour.

The entire Zoo family is mourning the loss of baby elephant Scotty. He was beloved throughout the community, and we know that others share in our grief.
There are several options for those who wish to memorialize Scotty:
You are invited to share special memories, photos or drawings of Scotty on the Zoo’s Facebook page or mail them to the Zoo (1100 Trevilian Way, Louisville KY 40213) where they will be kept in a scrapbook.
There will be space at the front of the Zoo (near the door of the Administrative Offices) where guests may leave remembrances. We ask that everyone refrain from bringing food.
Donations can be made to the Zoo in memory of Scotty which will benefit elephant conservation. As a wonderful Zoo ambassador, as well as an ambassador for his relatives in the remnant wild, Scotty provided an opportunity for visitors to make emotional connections and change behaviors that we hope will positively impact elephant conservation.
***
Scotty was born March 18, 2007, at the Louisville Zoo to mom Mikki. He was the first elephant born in Kentucky and the Zoo’s 40-year history.
Recently diagnosed with colic after experiencing severe gastrointestinal and digestive issues, 3-year-old baby elephant Scotty has passed away.
Scotty was making steady progress while under close 24-hour observation and care, but this morning he took a turn for the worse. Colic in elephants is not uncommon and it can turn very serious, very quickly, which was the case with Scotty.
When all hope of recovery was gone, the Zoo’s staff then made the very difficult decision to humanely euthanize him around 8:30 p.m.
“This is a very sad day for us. We are heartbroken,” Louisville Zoo Director John Walczak said. “We did everything we could to see Scotty though this. We had the best animal care and medical staff available, but we just weren’t able to save him. Scotty was a special member of our family who had a tremendous impact on our staff, volunteers, visitors and the community. We are deeply mourning his loss.”
A recent ultrasound showed displacement and gas distention in Scotty’s large bowel. The cause is still unknown. While under 24-hour care from his keepers, the Louisville Zoo’s Veterinary team was also checking on Scotty throughout each day and administering medication. In addition, they were consulting with the leading elephant veterinary experts in the nation as well as a local equine expert. The Zoo’s Veterinary team worked to alleviate his abdominal discomfort through diet, exercise, fluid therapy and medication, but unfortunately Scotty’s condition deteriorated quickly.
“Scotty will always remain in our hearts,” Louisville Zoo Director John Walczak said. “He was a special elephant, and we will greatly miss him.”
Information about how to remember Scotty will be released soon.
A necropsy will be performed and results will be released at a later date.

Universal City, California--King Kong, among the screen’s most powerful and enduring icons, will re-emerge in Summer 2010 as a new signature attraction created under the direction of Peter Jackson on the famed Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour.
“King Kong 360 3-D” Created by Peter Jackson will be the world's largest most intense 3D experience on the planet, combining thrilling visceral effects to create a next-generation theme park experience.
Peter Jackson, director of the Oscar®-winning 2005 Universal Pictures film upon which the attraction is based, said: “The new King Kong at Universal Studios Hollywood will be an incredible amount of fun and a chance to really push film and theme park technology. Aboard the Universal tram, you'll get a wrap-around view of the action through a process involving eight 3-D images shot and projected at 60 frames per second. The film and tram will be tied into a motion simulator that will allow you to physically experience this pulse-pounding spectacle, which includes a fight between Kong and a group of V-Rex, the larger cousins of the T-Rex. You’ll find yourself right in the middle of the action."
“King Kong 360 3-D” Created by Peter Jackson will be the first theme park attraction to be directed by the Oscar-winning filmmaker.
Larry Kurzweil, President and Chief Operating Officer, Universal Studios Hollywood, said: “King Kong has been an integral part of Universal Studios Hollywood for decades and, after the 2008 fire, we knew he had to be reintroduced as a new, groundbreaking, thoroughly over-the-top experience that will thrill new generations of Studio Tour guests. King Kong 360 will be the most exhilarating feature of our world-famous Studio Tour, setting the bar at a new level for immersive theme park experiences.”
In the new attraction, guests will be given special 3-D glasses as they enter a darkened soundstage aboard the Studio Tour trams and will be transported— via the magic of Surround Digital 3D projection —deep into a tangled jungle location. They’ll survive a close encounter with a swarm of hungry raptors, only to be confronted by the terrifying presence of 35' tall dinosaur behemoths, intent on attacking the tram and Studio Tour guests.
Suddenly, a 25' tall gorilla appears - Kong himself! The trams jolt and shudder as the guests find themselves caught in the middle of a titanic struggle between these colossal prehistoric foes - the great ape and carnivorous reptiles - action which sends the packed trams sliding ever closer to the edge of a bottomless chasm.
King Kong, known as “the eighth wonder of the world,” has been called “the experience for which movies were invented.” Since first appearing on the screen in the 1933 original classic, “King Kong” has been re-made twice, each time on a tremendous scale, earning a total of seven Oscar® and three Golden Globe® nominations. Most recently, Peter Jackson’s 2005 version took classic elements of the original “King Kong” story and adrenalized them with up-to-the-minute effects magic and the alchemic talents of a superlative group of filmmakers, cast and crew. Released to critical acclaim in late 2005, “King Kong” was a worldwide hit.
The arrival of the new “King Kong 360 3-D” Created by Peter Jackson experience coincides with major enhancements to the iconic Studio Tour. The most extensive backlot construction ever in the history of Universal Studios, which includes re-creations of legendary Hollywood sets and the introduction of brand-new shooting locations, will make the renowned Studio buzz with star-studded film and television production as never before. Studio trams were recently equipped as "mobile movie theaters" with state-of-the-art flat-screen high-definition monitors and digital playback systems. The new high-definition monitors feature commentary from filmmakers, actors and personalities. Clips from numerous movie and television productions, corresponding to sites visited along the Tour route, add a new dimension to the tour of backlot attractions, sets and facades.

CARLSBAD, Calif. (May 11, 2010) – Firefighters from the Carlsbad Fire Department helped the zany members of LEGOLAND® California’s Fun Town Volunteer Fire Department today put the first gallons of water into Kid Creek and Build-A-Raft River at LEGOLAND® Water Park opening May 28, 2010.
The two fire “crews” created a bucket brigade across the Build-A-Raft River, where kids will be able to customize their own raft made of soft LEGO® bricks before floating down the lazy river. Our local heroes from the Carlsbad Fire Department helped steady the flow of water shooting from the fire hose into Kid Creek, a lazy river built with younger kids in mind in the DUPLO® Splash Safari section of the world’s first LEGO themed Water Park.
When the bucket brigade completed the water fill, they were given a sneak peek of some of LEGOLAND Water Park’s other exciting elements including more than 20 jumbo LEGO models who splash or spray water on guests; Orange Rush, a family tube slide where up to four people can ride together down a 312-foot long curving track on an 11-foot in diameter half pipe; Twin Chasers, two side-by-side enclosed red tube slides that stretch nearly 130 feet, Splash Out, an open body slide that invites guests to slide 240 feet and “splash out” into the water below; and Joker Soaker, a fun interactive platform in the wade pool where kids can aim water cannons at each other as a LEGO jester model tells jokes and pours 350 gallons of water down upon them.
The 5.5 acre LEGOLAND Water Park will be located at the north end of LEGOLAND California adjacent to Fun Town with the entrance located between the Factory Tour and the Adventurer’s Club. LEGOLAND guests will be able to upgrade their Park tickets to include LEGOLAND Water Park for just $10. Geared for families with children ages 2 to 12, the Water Park will be included in the price of Water Park Hopper tickets and Resort Hopper tickets which include SEA LIFE Aquarium as well. Water Park admission will also be included in Resort Memberships.

As you venture through Hogwarts castle, you meet Harry, Ron and Hermione who convince you to skip a planned lecture and follow them. Upon taking their advice, you travel by Floo powder, and begin the adventure as you soar over Hogwarts, narrowly escape a dragon attack, have a close encounter with the Whomping Willow, get pulled into a Quidditch match and more.
“Guests will experience firsthand a completely new adventure featuring the iconic characters, amazing creatures and recognizable locations they’ve only read in the books or seen in the films,” said Thierry Coup, creative director for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
The Location
The Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey experience starts as soon as you walk through the gates of Hogwarts. Within the towering Hogwarts castle, you explore a truly magical place. You journey through iconic locations taken from the films and take in the extraordinary detail of each scene. They include:
· Dumbledore’s office: Here, you meet the Headmaster as he welcomes you to Hogwarts
· Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom: Where you first meet Harry, Ron and Hermione
· Gryffindor common room: You meet three additional characters who prepare you for your journey
· Room of Requirement: Here, with hundreds of floating candles above, you take your seat on an enchanted bench and begin the Forbidden Journey
· Other locations: In addition, guests will pass through the Dungeon passageway and hallways of Hogwarts where they will have the chance to see hundreds of wizard portraits from the films, including several magical talking portraits created exclusively for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, including the four founders of Hogwarts. Guests will even get a glimpse of the Sorting Hat.
The Innovation
This is more than just an attraction and it is unlike any theme park experience ever created. It’s a revolutionary, 360-degree theme park experience and first-ever combination of live-action, advanced robotic technology and innovative filmmaking – specially designed and developed for this brand-new adventure.
“We have created an entirely new way to place our guests into the heart of one of the most compelling stories of our time,” said Mark Woodbury, president of Universal Creative. “What we have done will forever change the theme park attraction experience.”
The attraction’s newly created ride system envelops guests in filmed action scenes and moves those scenes with them as they travel through the ride, allowing more time in the center of the adventure and with their favorite characters. This fusion of robotic technology and filmed scenes has never been achieved until now. In some cases, technology had to be invented to achieve the highest level of guest experience. The combination of pioneering, state-of-the-art technology, innovative filmmaking and surprises around every corner make this attraction the embodiment of the Harry Potter book and film series—and the future of theme park entertainment.

The Chance To Experience The Enchantment of Harry Potter Begins Spring 2010
ORLANDO, Fla. (January 28, 2010) – Visitors to the Ollivanders wand shop at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter will step into one of the most iconic scenes from the bestselling Harry Potter books and blockbuster feature films. With the assistance of a live actor, along with amazing special effects, guests of Ollivanders will get to experience the same type of magical moment Harry had in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” when a wand ”chooses them.”
Universal Orlando Resort has worked closely with Warner Bros. Consumer Products and the Warner Bros. Harry Potter brand team to make this moment as authentic, magical and immersive as possible for guests – a theme carried throughout the entire experience at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
“When guests visit Ollivanders, they will instantly feel like they’re in the shop from the films. It’s an intimate, single-windowed building, with the same signs, colors and other details read about in the books and seen in the films,” said Alan Gilmore, art director of the Harry Potter films and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. “But more importantly, visitors to Ollivanders will experience for themselves the magical moment that forever changed Harry’s life.”
Inside Ollivanders, visitors will be surrounded by thousands of multi-colored dusty wand boxes stacked on shelves from floor to ceiling. They will be welcomed by an inquisitive Wandkeeper, who will guide them through an enchanting experience to find their very own wand. First the Wandkeeper will ask the guest a few special questions and then select the first wand for them to try. Just like Harry, the guest will be prompted by the Wandkeeper to give the wand a wave, and a series of magical mishaps will occur until the right fit is found.
In addition to the magic featured in Ollivanders, guests will experience many other magical happenings at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, including a Howler featured in the Owl Post shop front window whose ranting can be heard by guests as they pass by; The Monster Book of Monsters in Dervish and Banges that will snarl and growl at anyone who tries to get too close, and the Hog’s Head which can be seen puffing his jowls at visitors who visit the Hog’s Head pub.
Inspired by J.K. Rowling’s compelling stories and characters – and faithful to the visual landscapes of the Warner Bros.’ films – The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal’s Islands of Adventure will provide visitors with a one-of-a-kind experience complete with multiple themed attractions, shops and an eating establishment. This completely immersive environment will transcend generations and bring the wonder and magic of the amazingly detailed Harry Potter books and films to life.
