SAN DIEGO ZOO JOINS FORCES WITH CONSERVATIONISTS TO SAVE ENDANGERED SPECIES IN AFRICA

To save endangered great ape species, a historic collaboration of government officials, national and international nongovernmental organizations and academic researchers, with the goal to determine priority sites and actions required to ensure the survival of an endangered great ape species, has led to the publication of the Regional Action Plan for the Conservation of the Nigeria-Cameroon Chimpanzee. The conservation plan, backed by the International Union for Conservation of NatureTM, is the first endorsed by the governments from these nations.

"The Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Republic of Cameroon are the only homes of the most endangered form of chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes ellioti, the Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee," said Republic of Cameroon Minister of Forestry and Wildlife Professor Elvis Ngolle Ngolle. "Both our governments recognize the great importance of biodiversity conservation in safeguarding our natural heritage, and we have therefore been closely involved in the development of this conservation action plan."

Following four years of collaboration, the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation ResearchTM, Wildlife Conservation Society, State University of New York-Albany, North Carolina Zoo, individuals working with these chimpanzees and conservation practitioners from the region have agreed on a priority list of sites and conservation actions urgently needed to secure the remaining wild populations.

In addition to identifying priority actions specific to each site, the plan considers region-wide actions, such as improving trans-boundary collaboration and law enforcement, a need for additional conservation research, participation and support of local people, additional recruitment and training of rangers and improving community livelihoods.

"Our conviction is that the proposed measures to conserve the Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee, such as the protection of forest habitats and the control of hunting, will generate an increase in the chimpanzee population and also benefit many of the other range-restricted, unique and endangered primates as well as other threatened animals found in the same Gulf of Guinea forests," said Federal Republic of Nigeria Minister of Environment John Odey. "By highlighting chimpanzees as 'flagship' species, we will be protecting much of the remaining biodiversity in these areas."

The Cross River gorilla, drill, Preuss's monkey and Preuss's red colobus would also benefit from any protection provided to this chimpanzee subspecies, which is listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It was in 1997 that the Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee was identified as a distinct subspecies. It is estimated that as few as 3,500 animals may remain in these two countries, making the Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee the most endangered chimpanzee in the world.

"The action plans set out the priority sites and actions that need to be instigated if we are to stem the decline in this chimpanzee," said Bethan Morgan, Ph.D., head of the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research's Central Africa Program and lead author of the action plan. "Implementation of the recommendations will make a significant difference to the survival of the Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee by protecting the majority of these populations over the next five years."

The resulting action plan is a co-publication between San Diego Zoo Global and the IUCN Primate Specialist Group. Funding to support this process was provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Great Ape Conservation Fund, the Arcus Foundation, San Diego Zoo Global (through the Offield Family Foundation), IUCN and the Primate Action Fund (Margot Marsh Biodiversity Foundation).

"This action plan is the culmination of years of hard work and will hopefully bring attention to this little-known subspecies of chimpanzee, which is restricted to the Guinean forests of West Africa, one of the richest and most endangered places on Earth," said Dr. Russell A. Mittermeier, chairman of the IUCN Primate Specialist Group and president of Conservation International, which helped to fund the action plan.

WEBSITE DESIGNED WITH KIDS IN MIND: SAN DIEGO ZOO KIDS

Videos, Photos, Games Deliver Animal Fun, Facts for Families

There is always something new at the San Diego Zoo - and the same goes for the San Diego Zoo Kids website. The new kids.sandiegozoo.org site is full of photos, videos and interactive games and is designed for children ages 3-11. The format and features include nearly everything a kid could want to know about animals in an easy-to-navigate site. And for fun, kids can switch between a zoo and safari theme as they browse the site.

"We designed the "San Diego Zoo Kids" site as a way for children to connect to animals and their habitats, even when they're not able to visit the Zoo or the Safari Park," said Debra Erickson, director of communications and interpretation for San Diego Zoo Global. "We expect kids and their parents will visit this site whenever they want to learn something new about creatures and their features or have questions about wildlife."

The site focuses on different characteristics of animals, with features like "The Nose Knows," which is about all the fascinating types of noses found on animals. The "Fantastic Frogs" feature shares with children the amazing colors and varying sizes of the world's amphibians. In "Precious Pandas," kids can learn about these rare black and white bears and what makes the species so unique, like the fact that they're carnivores but eat mostly bamboo - a plant!

For those in the mood to play, the newest online game from the San Diego Zoo is "Safari Park Adventure," which challenges players to become a ranger and protect wildlife. Players take a virtual safari and have to collect 30 different cards along the way to achieve the rank of ranger. Once a ranger, they can move on to protect polar bears in the Polar Bear Plunge game or journey through time by playing Elephant Odyssey.

Each month the site adds new features and videos, including profiles of jobs at the Zoo and the Safari Park, animal-themed arts and crafts projects kids can make at home and information about how to protect and save  threatened and endangered species such as the polar bear and California condor.

This site is also a great place to watch the animals at the Zoo and the Park in real time - it has links to all the animal cams on grounds so viewers can watch elephants, orangutans, pandas, and polar bears play, eat and sleep any time of the day.

SeaWorld Orlando Releases Three Green Sea Turtles Back into Their Native Waters

June 22, 2011 – (Orlando, FL) Today three green sea turtles were released back into waters of Florida’s east coast. All three turtles were rehabilitated by SeaWorld Orlando’s animal rescue team.

The first turtle to be released --a quite large, 20-inch turtle-- was brought to SeaWorld’s rehabilitation facility in January of this year with pneumonia. Considered a sub-adult, this female green sea turtle was given around-the-clock care by the Park’s turtle specialists. She was released today in Eddy Creek, and the aquarium team has confidence she will do just fine back in the wild.

A turtle that was recently brought to SeaWorld for a shell infection and barnacles also was released today. Barnacles can cause stress and disable the flippers of the turtle. After carefully removing the barnacles, the aquarium team nursed the young turtle’s shell back to health. Turtle specialists are optimistic about the turtles release back into Cape Canaveral.

The day of turtle releases ended with the third green sea turtle which was rescued in December of 2010 for fishing line ingestion, which is a common injury for sea turtles. SeaWorld’s care team aided this turtle back to health by removing the line and monitoring the turtle’s weight until it reached a healthy benchmark. The fastest of the three turtles took off into the waves, which aquarists say is a good sign.

“Today’s release went well, and we’re happy that the turtle’s are fully recovered and are safely back into their natural habitats,” said Dan Conklin, SeaWorld Orlando’s Supervisor of Aquarium.

Since the sea turtle rescue program began at SeaWorld Orlando in 1980, more than 1,530 sea turtles have been cared for by the park's vets and turtle experts. Each was either rescued by the staff or brought to the park due to cold stress, injuries from nets, fishing line and hooks, ingestion of trash such as plastic bags, boat strikes, natural causes and oil contamination. The team's success rate in caring for turtles with such a wide variety of injuries is amazingly high: 68% of the turtles brought to SeaWorld in the past 30 years have been returned to the wild after hands-on care and TLC.

Coinciding with today’s release is this Friday’s, June 24, launch of "Turtle: The Incredible Journey", the first movie from SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment’s newly formed SeaWorld Pictures division, in theaters across the country and at Pointe Orlando and Oviedo Marketplace in Central Florida.

It's a stunning family documentary and award-winning film that follows the life and migration of a loggerhead turtle from hatchling to maturity on a two-year adventure of more than 9,000 miles guided only by instinct. The film is a remarkable example of wildlife documentary filmmaking and is narrated by Academy Award nominee Miranda Richardson.

“Turtle: The Incredible Journey” Debuts in Orlando on June 24th

Orlando, Fla., June 14, 2011 -- Turtle: The Incredible Journey, a family documentary directed by National Geographic Explorer’s Nick Stringer and distributed by SeaWorld Pictures, debuts Friday, June 24th in Orlando.

Turtle: The Incredible Journey is an award-winning film that follows the life and migration of a loggerhead turtle from hatching to maturity and a return to its original Florida nesting grounds.  The loggerhead turtle, a threatened species, has one of the longest and most difficult migratory patterns of any marine animal: Sea turtles newly hatched on the East Coast of the United States (usually in Florida) make their way from the sand into the ocean, and then begin a voyage that can span the entire Atlantic Ocean, only to return decades later to that same beach.

The movie is playing at Pointe Orlando and Oviedo Marketplace.  Check listings for show times.

The movie’s trailer can be downloaded here:

The movie’s poster can be downloaded here:

“This is a remarkable story crafted by one of the world’s most gifted documentary filmmakers,” said Scott Helmstedter, Chief Creative Officer for SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment.  “Turtle: The Incredible Journey does what our parks have been doing for more than five decades: inspire, enrich and entertain.  Helping bring this film and its powerful message of the fragility and beauty of our oceans to the public is what SeaWorld is and what we have always been about.”

Stringer’s documentary team follows the loggerhead turtle on an adventure of more than 9,000 miles guided only by instinct. Stringer and his camera crew spent two years following loggerhead turtles on their trips across the ocean, and have captured on film the remarkable life cycle of a beautiful creature that struggles to survive in an increasingly unforgiving environment.

The film is narrated by Academy Award nominee Miranda Richardson, and will be released to theaters in both standard theatrical formats as well as 3D in selected locations.

SeaWorld's "Best Dad" Award Goes to Simon the Otter

SeaWorld is home to many finned, feathered and furry fathers that have had a role in more than 18,000 animals born or hatched at our parks over four decades. This year, SeaWorld announces our “Best Dad” award recipient, Simon the otter, in this heartwarming video, and also the runner-ups in a fun sheet dads and kids can read together.

Animal video -- “Best Dad” Award: Simon, the Little Otter with a Big Heart
Simon the Asian small-clawed river otter is one of the most helpful fathers at SeaWorld Orlando, demonstrating an amazingly sensitive side when it comes to caring for his young. He protects his pups, plays with them, brings their mother food, and takes over to cuddle them when their mother takes a break. Simon even helps with swimming lessons: mom pushes the pups into the water and he scoops them out if they appear to be struggling.

This video shows Simon receiving his special award and also him being a great dad through the years. It even includes rare footage -- shot two years ago with a tiny night-vision camera concealed inside the otter’s den -- of Simon cuddling and playing with his youngsters.

Our “Best Dad” winner has fathered several litters through the years, showing these amazing parenting skills each time. Simon and his offspring are all doing great and can be seen in the SeaWorld shows.

Universal Orlando commemorated the anniversary at 9:23 a.m. – the exact time The Wizarding World of Harry Potter opened on June 18, 2010.  After taking part in a countdown led by the Hogwarts Express conductor, guests and team members celebrated in the streets of Hogsmeade while “snow” confetti and gold streamers fell from the sky.  Guests also enjoyed complimentary Butterbeer, cauldron cakes and Chocolate Frogs.

“We’re so excited to celebrate this milestone with our guests,” said Bill Davis, president of Universal Orlando Resort.  “It’s been an incredible year for us and our guests, and we look forward to creating more exciting memories with them in the years to come.”

Universal Orlando is also creating a virtual celebration by launching today a new “Share Your Story” tab on its official Facebook page.  The all-new tab gives fans the opportunity to interact with one another and share favorite memories and photos from their visit to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – whether it’s tasting Butterbeer for the first time, watching their daughter as she’s selected by the perfect wand or soaring above Hogwarts with their family.

If fans have not been able to visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, they can share why they aspire to on the “Share Your Story” tab as well.  U.S. residents who share their stories on the tab will be automatically entered into a contest where they can win a trip to Universal Orlando Resort this fall.  To take part in the virtual celebration, share their stories or read other fans’ stories, guests should visit www.Facebook.com/UniversalOrlandoResort.

THE FORCE IS STRONG AT LEGOLAND® CALIFORNIA FOR LEGO® STAR WARS™ DAYS

CARLSBAD, Calif. (June 18, 2011) –   Thousands of people found the Force at LEGOLAND® California during the first day of the popular LEGO® Star Wars Days at the family theme park in Carlsbad June 18 and 19. Park guests of all ages dressed as their favorite Star Wars characters and spent the day interacting with members of the 501st Legion of Stormtroopers and Rebel Legion.  Throughout the day, guests participated in out-of-this-world activities like the Droid Hunt, video game battles, Darth Vader meet-and-greets, Jedi trivia competitions and a costume contest.

LEGOLAND California’s newest addition, Star Wars Miniland, was a bonus to the themed event featuring six scenes from the live-action Star Wars movies and a scene from the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars all in 1:20 scale. More than 1.5 million LEGO bricks were used to create the 2,000 LEGO models seen in the planets Naboo, Geonosis, Kashyyyk, Mustafar, Tatooine, Hoth, Endor and Christophsis.

Also new this year, LEGOLAND California gives Park guests an exclusive preview to the amazing sand sculpture honoring Star Wars Miniland in The Beginning of the Park . Created by six of the world’s best sand sculptors, the detailed sand sculpture includes a sand version of the iconic Millennium Falcon, Darth Vader, Yoda and Luke Skywalker. The sand sculpture and it’s progress from start to finish can be seen on the new television show “Sand Masters” airing on Travel Channel June 19 at 10 p.m.

The popular Droid Hunt returned this year as guests of all ages received collectible “droid badges” if they were among the first in line at The Beginning of the Park. When guests wearing the collectible droid badges were “caught” within the Park by members of the 501st Legion, they had to respond to the question “How long have you had these droids?” to receive a raffle ticket for the chance to win fantastic LEGO Star Wars and LEGOLAND California merchandise.

Other features and attractions include the LEGO Star Wars Fan Gallery, highlighting LEGO Star Wars creations built by local fans and LEGO Club members; Jedi Trivia contests, which allow guests to use their Star Wars knowledge to compete for fabulous prizes; and a Miniland U.S.A. word scramble activity to discover scrambled letters hidden next to ARF trooper mini-figures. Those who locate all the letters and decode the secret phrase are entered to win an exclusive LEGO Star Wars Prize Package.

Guests are encouraged to dress as their favorite Star Wars characters and participate in the daily costume contest.  Prizes are awarded in two age categories each day: 8 and younger and 9 to 15.  Each prize package is valued at more than $500 and includes exclusive LEGO Star Wars toys, collectible gear and tickets to LEGOLAND California Resort.

ITV’S ALISON HAMMOND TAKES ON WORLD’S FIRST TRIPLE LAUNCH ROLLER COASTER

Petrified TV presenter is first in UK to ride Cheetah Hunt – a new mega high speed attraction at Busch Gardens Tampa in Florida

This Morning’s showbiz and film expert Alison Hammond - who is also scared of roller coasters - is the first person in the UK to ride Cheetah Hunt, the world’s first triple launch roller coaster.

The high speed ride, which officially launches to the public on Friday (today) in Tampa Bay, Florida will attract thousands of Brits over the next three months, as the ride launches for the busy summer holiday season.

With fast twists and super turns - plus three high speed accelerations - Cheetah Hunt is guaranteed to make riders scream for the entire 90 seconds, much like the terrified TV presenter Hammond did when strapped in to the front row of the roller coaster yesterday at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay.

Hammond, the 36 year old Brummie who was a holiday rep in a former life, admitted that she has been petrified of roller coasters since she was a little girl. Pleasantly surprised once she’d come off Cheetah Hunt, Alison said, “It is officially the fastest ride I have ever ridden and was actually a much smoother ride than expected. I screamed all the way round but would recommend it to everyone... all I can say is awesome!”

Carefully engineered to create thrills for roller coaster riding holiday-goers, the world’s first triple launch roller coaster literally replicates the movement of a Cheetah, pairing man-made thrills with nature’s fastest land animal. By moving at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour, the exciting triple launch coaster moves just as a cheetah would, leaving riders feeling exhilarated from the thrill of the chase.

Cheetah Hunt* isn’t just for thrill-seekers…visitors to the attraction can also get up-close to these beautiful cats and marvel at their awesome speed just a whisker away at Cheetah Run, the expansive cheetah habitat where trainers will carry out daily sprints with these high speed animals.

Alongside the new Cheetah Hunt roller coaster, families can also get closer than ever before to the cheetah, literally eye to eye through elevated, glass-panelled viewing areas at Cheetah Run part of the all new ancient realm. Here guests can also explore interactive touch screens to learn even more about these big cats and how the SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund has been helping endangered cheetahs in the wild since 2005.

LEGOLAND® California Kicks Off Summer with Wild Splash Zoo Opening

CARLSBAD, Calif. (May 27, 2011) – A wall of soft LEGO® bricks spelling out “Splash Zoo” came crashing down at LEGOLAND® California today as two dozen toddlers from military families rushed in to the newest area at LEGOLAND Water Park. The toddlers, who have parents based at MCAS Miramar, were invited to help the family theme park kick off Memorial Day Weekend with the opening of Splash Zoo, an interactive water play area designed especially for children ages 1 to 3.

“We talk a lot about heroes here at LEGOLAND California - it is a great honor to have some real life heroes and their families here with us today,” said Peter Ronchetti, General Manager of LEGOLAND California Resort during the ceremony.

The military families had the Water Park to themselves for nearly an hour before it opened to the public. Splash Zoo features interactive spray pads, fountains, a teeter totter and giant interactive DUPLO® animals. The lion, polar bear, giraffe, zebra and penguins in Splash Zoo are scale replicas of the animals in the popular LEGO DUPLO Zoo product line. Each animal has a unique interactive element where children push buttons or turn levers to splash and spray water.

“We listen to feedback from our guests and one thing we heard a lot from the moms in particular was they wanted more activities for their young children,” Ronchetti said as he described the inspiration for Splash Zoo, which was designed by Park Project Designer Lindsay Burroughs.

LEGOLAND Water Park is the world’s first LEGO themed Water Park and opened last summer. It includes 7 slides, the Build-A-Raft River, Imagination Station and DUPLO Splash Safari. Memorial Day Weekend marks the official start of summer at LEGOLAND Water Park which will be open seven days a week now through Sept. 5. LEGOLAND Water Park is a $12 upgrade from LEGOLAND California tickets and is included in the price of Resort and Water Park Hopper tickets. Barrera explodes on stage performing a whirling dervish of flying lariats and cracking whips. His riveting stage presence and incredible physical talents have earned him legions of fans across California. Unlike your typical Hollywood "action star" or stuntman, Barrera doesn't need to hide behind computer graphics, wire work, slow-motion camera tricks or stunt doubles.  Fans call Barrera a walking, talking, special effect, and he does it all live. During his shows he might demonstrate his jaw-dropping double-handed bullwhip routine. Where he uses two seven-foot black bullwhips to snap out rhythms to accompany a live singer. A routine he calls the black mamba dance. He might lasso and hogtie an audience member in the middle of a performance.

A "Down home, good ole' boy from North Carolina," Russell has toured the country performing sold out shows in Nashville, San Antonio, Reno, Biloxi, and all over California. He's sure to raise a ruckus!

Children will have the opportunity to touch and interact with the horses and the  4-H staff volunteers will be on-hand to answer questions and share information about the horses and their program. WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (June 1, 2011) – Imagine being one of LEGOLAND Florida’s Model Citizens (the Park’s affectionate term for its employees) poised at the front gate on October 15 welcoming the very first guest through the turnstiles at the 150-acre family-fun theme park. That person could be one of the remaining 800 Model Citizens selected in the massive hiring spree starting at LEGOLAND Florida, Central Florida’s newest theme park.  Those interested in positions in operations, food service and retail may apply online at www.LEGOLAND.com/jobs starting now.

“Customer service and a kid-focused approach are two key attributes we’re looking for in a LEGOLAND Florida ‘Model Citizen,’” remarked Teresa Vaughn, director of Human Resources. “We call our employees ‘Model Citizens’ because that’s what we expect.”

“With the unemployment level in Polk County at 10.8% as of April 2011, we are thrilled that LEGOLAND Florida has decided to call Winter Haven home,” Paula Bohnstedt assistant director for Polk Works. “I truly believe LEGOLAND Florida will be the catalyst we need to launch continuous growth and success in Polk County.”
