Tom Felton Visits The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort

Tom Felton, who portrays Draco Malfoy in the blockbuster Harry Potter film series, visited with the Beauxbatons at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter during his recent visit to Universal Orlando Resort on December 28. After enjoying Butterbeer with his friends and visiting Hogwarts castle, Felton spent the rest of his Universal Orlando vacation enjoying the rides and attractions at both theme parks.

PRESS RELEASE FLIGHT OF THE CONDOR LEADS BIRDS FROM U.S. TO COLOMBIA

On Wednesday, the largest bird of the Americas took flight aboard a plane bound from Miami to Bogotá, Colombia. Two juvenile Andean condors will soon spread their 10-foot wing span and soar above the clouds as part of a successful international collaborative program that has been reintroducing this endangered species for two decades.

     One bird hatched at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, the other at the Denver Zoo. The pair was being prepared for their release into the wild while at the White Oak Conservation Center in Florida. After their arrival in Colombia, the birds will spend approximately one month in an acclimation aviary before their release into a wilderness area 50 miles northeast of Bogotá.

     "It's an incredible experience to see endangered animals that were hatched through conservation programs in zoos, like the Andean condor, released and flying among the mountaintops in their native habitat," said Michael Mace, curator of birds for the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and coordinator of the condors' trip to Colombia. "One of the most rewarding aspects for zoos and conservation organizations is to be able to participate in reintroduction programs to aid in re-establishing a species in the wild for hopefully generations into the future."
     The two condors will be received by CORPOBOYACA, a natural resources management agency, on behalf of Parques Nacionales de Colombia, with the help of the Colombian federal agency Ministerio de Medioambiente de Colombia and the private organization Fundación Neotropical.

     "Denver Zoo is very excited to be a part of this reintroduction process and we're happy to contribute to the recovery of this magnificent species in the wild," says John Azua, Denver Zoo curator of birds. "This is a very important project and we want to continue to see the numbers of these amazing birds climb. We also appreciate being able to work with local agencies to secure a better world for animals through human understanding."

     The Andean condor program is international in scope with assistance from federal and local agencies in North and South America. Forty organizations within the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) have assisted and 18 zoos in the United States have hatched condors that have been sent to South America as part of this conservation program. Conservation centers play an important role in rearing and preparing animals for release projects.
     "For the past two years the two condors have been living in a large flight enclosure, receiving natural prey diets, and were isolated from contact with people, all important factors in creating excellent candidates for the release program in South America," said Mike Taylor, avian collection manager at White Oak Conservation Center.

     For more than 20 years, the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park have been working with South American government agencies and conservation organizations to send Andean condors to both Colombia and Venezuela. Including these two birds, 82 Andean condors have been sent to these two countries. The San Diego Zoo and Safari Park have sent 31 Andean condors to South America over the last 16 years, while this is Denver Zoo's first bird sent to South America.
     This species of vulture is found throughout the Andes Mountains from Colombia to Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. Primarily, the Andean condor lives in high mountainous regions and open grasslands.

Three-Month-Old Reindeer Named Boris Drinks from Bottle and Walks on Harness

     Although there are jokes all around the San Diego Zoo that Boris the baby reindeer may go missing Christmas Eve, keepers are fully expecting to wean the reindeer from his bottle Christmas Day. But, then again, lots about Boris has been surprising, especially the fact he was born in an exhibit that was exclusively female before he showed up. (A female reindeer was unexpectedly pregnant when she arrived at the Zoo in May.)

     “It has been so much fun watching Boris grow up here at the San Diego Zoo,” said Tammy Batson, a San Diego Zoo lead keeper. “When he was born he was all legs, but now he’s even getting antlers!”

     The San Diego Zoo is open 365 days a year and guests who wants to watch the reindeer go through this phase of his maturity can stop by the Zoo’s Polar Rim on Christmas Day. The Zoo is currently celebrating Jungle Bells, its holiday event.  Jungle Bells features animal-themed light displays, a handbell choir, and special treats for animals – and guests – throughout the Zoo. There are new light shows and live shows including the Jumpin’ Jammin’ Elves, who use a trampoline to launch themselves into the air where they twist and flip to holiday tunes.  During the celebration, which runs through Jan. 2, 2011, grounds will stay open until 8 p.m., three hours past the usual closing time, except on Dec. 24.

     Boris was born on Sept. 18 while on exhibit. He was about 8 pounds at birth. Unfortunately, he was too weak to stand and nurse and he grew cold. Boris was taken off exhibit the next day when it became apparent he wasn’t going to nurse.  When he was put back after a few days, his mother was not attentive to him, so the animal care staff continued feeding him with a bottle.

    Boris now weighs about 75 pounds. He eats hay and an alfalfa-based pellet and grazes on the grasses, acacia and other plants in his exhibit. Boris lives with four female reindeer and is part of the herd. He loves to play in the pool in his exhibit.  Both female and male reindeer grow antlers. Reindeer typically live 15 to 20 years.

You Won't Believe What We Found!!!

WHAT A TREASURE!

The museum’s archives hold many treasures, some of them hidden.
Awhile ago, we noticed a reel of 8mm film that was marked simply “Wabash Scenes.”  Since we have no equipment for viewing this kind of film—and since we could tell from the vinegary smell that the film was deteriorating, we sent it to the Indiana Historical Society to be transferred to DVD.
We got it back last week and we are thrilled!  It turned out to be street scenes of the city of Wabash from 1937.  It seems that some forward-thinking person took his or her camera around the city, filming people, government buildings, churches, and grade schools, complete with the students!  We posted some of it on Facebook and have had an overwhelming reaction--texts, e-mails, phone calls, and Facebook comments. In response to this excitement, we are making a special offer!
Make a $25 or larger gift to the museum by the end of the year, and we will give you a copy of the full 48-minute silent film. All of these donations will go toward archival supplies, ensuring that more gems like this one are preserved for the people of Wabash County .  What a unique Christmas gift!  (Personally, I will make a donation and look forward to searching for my father among those school children!)

LEGOLAND® California Rings in the New Year With Largest So. Cal New Year’s Celebration For Kids

(Carlsbad, Calif. – Dec. 9, 2010) – LEGOLAND® California is making the largest New Year’s Eve celebration for kids even bigger this year by adding two new bands to the Kids’ New Year’s Eve lineup. Aaron Nigel Smith and the FUNdamentals  and Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band are joining recent Grammy nominee Justin Roberts and the Not Ready for Naptime Players  for three hours of kid-friendly concerts that will have the whole family dancing as they ring in the New Year. Like the famous Times Square party, Kids’ New Year’s Eve, presented by Western Dental, features a countdown followed by a huge LEGO® brick dropping 22-feet into 2011 along with a dazzling fireworks display over Miniland where midnight strikes at 6p.m. so kids don’t miss their bedtime.

Justin Roberts and the Not Ready for Naptime Players return for the fourth year in a row on the heels of their Grammy nomination for their new album “Jungle Gym”. Roberts and his band will treat revelers to a concert, featuring new songs from their latest album as well as favorites from years past.  With high-energy tunes spanning genres from rock, folk, rockabilly and punk combined with hip, sophisticated lyrics, Justin Roberts and the Not Ready for Naptime Players performance is fun for children and parents alike.

The second band in the lineup, Aaron Nigel Smith and the FUNdamentals are on a mission to share their love of music and movement with the world. Aaron Nigel Smith’s most recent Album “Everybody Loves to Dance” was voted as one of 10 Best Kids’ CDs of 2010 by Parents Magazine. Their fun, inspired and lively music includes hip, upbeat versions of “Simon Says” and “This Little Piggy” and is sure to get the audience up off their feet.

The third band set to rock Kids’ New Year’s Eve is Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band who just released their debut album, “Luckiest Adventure” to rave reviews. Their catchy and creative tunes have been compared to the likes of Jack Johnson and will round out the festivities with their “dancibility”.

Festivities begin at 3 p.m. with a performance by Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band followed at 4 p.m. by Aaron Nigel Smith and the FUNdamentals with Justin Roberts and the Not Ready for Naptime Players at 5 p.m. The evening ends with a bang at 6 p.m. with a  countdown to “midnight” when fireworks light up the sky over Miniland.

POLK COUNTY, FL (December 8, 2010) – LEGOLAND® Florida and Pepsi Beverages Company (“PBC”) have reached a multi-year agreement that will make PBC the official beverage provider of Central Florida’s newest full-day theme park.  The family Park, opening October 2011, is proud to partner with PBC on this hallmark union.

“This partnership is the beginning of a tremendous relationship between LEGOLAND Florida and Pepsi,” said LEGOLAND General Manager, Adrian Jones.  “We are excited to welcome PBC into the LEGOLAND family, and know that the partnership between these two quality brands will be a great success for both companies.”

AFRICAN ELEPHANT EXHIBIT EXPANDS AS HERD GROWS

With only one month to spare before the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's African elephant herd grows by one more with the birth of a calf expected in January-for a total of 17 elephants-the elephant habitat has nearly doubled in size to 5½ acres.
     The Safari Park's six adult female elephants and eight youngsters, ranging in age from 7 months to 6 years old, moved as a unit while exploring the new area on Tuesday. Although most of the adults kept close together to protect the herd, the calves enjoyed playing in a pile of soft dirt, rolling in hay and pulling up grass bunches.
     The exhibit expansion provides a second pool for swimming, another barn to warm up in during the winter months, if needed, and additional enrichment items to keep the elephants mentally and physically fit. The new space was vacated in 2009 by four Asian elephants that found a new home at the San Diego Zoo's Harry and Grace Steele Elephant Odyssey, a 7.5-acre exhibit housing more than 30 species of animals including lions and California condors.
     After months of planning and fund-raising, hydraulic gates were built to connect the two yards to create one large habitat for the herd that has doubled its size since the adults were rescued in 2003 from the Kingdom of Swaziland. There, they faced being killed because elephant overpopulation was destroying habitat.
     The 1,800-acre San Diego Zoo Safari Park (historically referred to as Wild Animal Park) is operated by the not-for-profit San Diego Zoo and includes a 900-acre native species reserve. The organization focuses on conservation and research work around the globe, educates millions of individuals a year about wildlife and maintains accredited horticultural, animal, library and photo collections. The Zoo also manages the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research. The important conservation and science work of these entities is supported in part by The Foundation of the Zoological Society of San Diego.

SEA LIFE™ CARLSBAD AQUARIUM IS DREAMING OF A GREEN CHRISTMAS

Aquarium offers underwater Christmas tree decorating, eco-friendly holiday crafts, fish gifts
and holiday tips

CARLSBAD, Calif. (Dec. 6, 2010) –  If everyone wrapped just three gifts in reused paper or fabric gift bags, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 hockey rinks… this is just one of many tips SEA LIFE Aquarium is sharing this holiday season in hopes that guests will take care of our environment now and throughout the year.

Earlier today, the Aquarium kicked off the holiday season with divers donning their elf hats and decorating a 6-foot-tall LEGO® Christmas tree from below the surface of the 200,000 gallon Lost City of Atlantis ocean display. While guests and fish alike watched, the divers decked the boughs of the Christmas tree made of nearly 4,000 DUPLO® bricks with LEGO ornaments, special fishy treats, and topped off the tree with a sea star. SEA LIFE Aquarium’s holiday celebration takes place now through Dec. 31.

While the underwater tree decorating took place, other aquarists were busy-little-‘bakers’ making dozens of Christmas cookies for the fishes. The cookies are not your typical holiday gingerbread or sugar cookie. These fishy-favorites are made of a special gel paste containing nutrients and fish food, cut into holiday shapes. The special cookies were part of the Aquarium’s enrichment program for its inhabitants.

Other SEA LIFE yuletide activities include a holiday-themed Dive Show taking place daily at 11 a.m. at the Lost City of Atlantis. The show features Green Elf (a diver communicating with guests from underwater) and Holiday Helper (who stays on dry land) guiding families on ways to be ‘greener’ for the holiday season with an eco-friendly, interactive quiz. During the show, every time an audience member answers an eco-friendly question correctly, the diver adds decorations to the tree. Guests can sign a Green Holiday Pledge at the end of the show, promising they will continue to be Ocean Heroes.

The Aquarium’s hilarious and interactive multi-media puppet show, “Shark Talk” also takes on a green-theme. At “Shark Talk”, guests find themselves as part of the live studio audience for a late night TV show hosted by Jay Octo and featuring movie star Hammie the Hammerhead. The show runs each day at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. also at the Lost City of Atlantis.

Guests visiting SEA LIFE on Saturday, Dec. 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. can take part in a ‘green’ crafting event and make a snow globe from recycled materials. All holiday activities are included in the price of SEA LIFE admission, $20 for adults; $17 for seniors 60+; $13 for kids ages 3-12.)

Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy Opens This Friday at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay

Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy will open December 3 in Busch Gardens ’ Moroccan Palace Theater.  Created and directed by renowned theatrical and circus impresario Neil Goldberg, Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy is an exotic encounter inspired by nature’s unpredictable creations, brought to life by an international cast of soaring aerialists, spine-bending contortionists, acrobats, jugglers and musicians. 

Brooke Burke Helps Santa Light the World’s Largest LEGO® Christmas Tree at LEGOLAND® California

CARLSBAD, Calif. (Nov. 29, 2010) –  It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at LEGOLAND® California where Brooke Burke from “Dancing with the Stars” and her family helped Santa light the world’s largest LEGO® Christmas tree tonight. As guests waited to see the 30-foot-tall tree illuminate, they enjoyed a performance by Jingle Bell Brass. LEGOLAND California Resort General Manager Peter Ronchetti also presented $10,000 to Operation Smile on behalf of Burke.

“Thanks to Brooke Burke and to LEGOLAND,” said Operation Smile Representative Robyn Mircoff. “This donation will provide surgeries for more than 41 children through our partner countries.”

The celebration tonight began as the Toy Soldier from the Park’s interactive holiday musical “Let it Snow” introduced Ronchetti, who spoke of a great 2010 and hinted at things to come in 2011: “2010 was an exciting year for LEGOLAND California as we introduced Clutch Powers to our guests with a 4-D movie and opened the world’s first  LEGO themed Water Park with great success!” Ronchetti continued, “I am so eager to tell you what we are bringing to LEGOLAND California for 2011 but promised to keep my lips shut until our January press conference so you’ll just have to come back and see us.”

Burke, her fiancé David Charvet and their 3-year-old daughter Rain and 2-year-old son Shaya spent the day enjoying LEGOLAND prior to the ceremony. “The holidays for us are all about giving back and spending time together as a family and here at LEGOLAND this was the perfect place to do that.” Burke is a successful host, actress and entrepreneur.  She just completed co-hosting ABC’s hit competition show, “Dancing With The Stars,” with Tom Bergeron, having earned the coveted mirror ball trophy as season seven’s champion with her professional dance partner, Derek Hough.  The mother of four (all between the ages of 2 and 10) is Co-CEO of the popular website ModernMom.com, President of BabooshBaby.com and she will add author to her resume when Penguin Books publishes her first book, “The Naked Mom,” in February 2011.

The world’s largest LEGO® Christmas tree is made of more than 245,000 forest green DUPLO® bricks, adorned with more than 240 LEGO ornaments and surrounded by packages and LEGO friends the whole family can enjoy. Tonight’s tree lighting ceremony marks the beginning of LEGOLAND California’s Holly Jolly Holidays presented by Western Dental which runs through Dec. 31, 2010. The entire theme park is transformed into a holiday wonderland featuring vibrant holiday decorations, festive entertainment every weekend including carolers and strolling musicians plus nightly fireworks Dec. 26 through 30. Children may pose with a five-foot-tall snowman made of more than 37,000 LEGO bricks or with a life-size LEGO Santa, his sleigh and two reindeer featuring 51,100 LEGO bricks. Also, from Dec. 2 through 24, a child will randomly be selected to help pull the switch that lights the LEGO Christmas tree during a fun ceremony right before the Park closes each night.

“Let it Snow” returns with festive songs, dancing and a holiday story to warm guest’s hearts. The musical holiday show runs daily through January 1.
