Actor, Director Diego Luna Collaborates with Universal Studios Hollywood To Create Disturbing New “Halloween Horror Nights” Maze, “La Llorona: Villa De Almas Perdidas,” Based on Terrifying Mexican Legend

Universal City, California— La Llorona, the fearful story of melancholy and murder that has terrified Mexican and Latin American children for generations, will have an expanded presence at this year’s “Halloween Horror Nights®” event as Universal Studios Hollywood recruits Mexico-based film star Diego Luna as a creative consultant to design the all-new terror-filled maze, “La Llorona: Villa De Almas Perdidas.”  The event begins on September 23 and continues on select nights through October 31.

“La Llorona:  Villa De Almas Perdidas,” which translates to “Weeping Woman:  Village of Lost Souls,” will feature elaborate sets depicting sites within and around a small Mexican village.  The new maze will tell the haunting story of “La Llorona,” doomed to wander the earth forever after drowning her children in a desperate attempt to win a lost love.  She then drowns herself when this attempt to win her lost love fails. According to the legend, La Llorona’s dreadful, wailing cries—“My children!  Where are my children?”—can be heard eternally piercing the night.  La Llorona’s frail, drenched body lurking throughout the dead of night will invariably elicit unwavering dread from the helpless village inhabitants or maze guests as her presence signifies impending death.

Diego Luna said: “Like all Mexican children, I grew up with the story of ‘La Llorona’ and I think it’s a tale with universal appeal. Story-telling is at the heart of all my work and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help present the great ‘La Llorona’ legend in a different kind of medium at the ‘Halloween Horror Nights’ event.”

Diego Luna began his acting career before age 12 and came to international attention with his performance in the award-winning film, “Y Tu Mamá También.” Since then, he has shown tremendous versatility as an actor, writer, producer and director.  He was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild award for his role in Universal Picture’s critically-acclaimed, award-winning film “Milk,” served as executive producer of the gritty and much-praised drama “Sin Nombre,” and recently won Mexico’s prestigious Silver Ariel Award for co-writing the movie “Abel,” which he also directed.  Diego Luna is currently filming “Elysium,” starring opposite Matt Damon and Jodie Foster.  He’ll soon be seen opposite Will Ferrell in the comedy, “Casa De Mi Padre,” and in the thriller, “Contraband,” opposite Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale.

Diego Luna is be a key member of a Hollywood horror “dream team” assembled by Universal Studios Hollywood to create the ultimate “live” Halloween nightmare. The team also includes director, writer, producer and actor Eli Roth, who will present the new maze, “Eli Roth’s Hostel: Hunting Season,” rock-horror legend Alice Cooper, who will present the new maze “Alice Cooper:  Welcome To My Nightmare,” and multi-platinum recording artist and filmmaker, Rob Zombie, making an encore performance with his nightmarish 3D world of carnage and chaos in “Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses: In 3D ZombieVision.”

“The Thing: Assimilation,” inspired by Universal Pictures’ upcoming thriller, and “The Wolf Man:  The Curse of Talbot Hall,” inspired by the Academy Award®-winning Universal Pictures film will add to the Hollywood horror clout.  An all new terrifying backlot experience, “Terror Tram:  Scream 4 Your Life,” based on the latest installment of Wes Craven’s “Scream” film series, will unleash the iconic “Ghostface Killer” on Universal’s famed backlot, the heart of the world’s most famous horror moviemaking studio.

ENDANGERED SPECIES "TAKIN" IN DIGS AT SAN DIEGO ZOO'S PANDA TREK

Visitors to the San Diego Zoo on Tuesday were surprised with a special treat: views of seven Sichuan takins balancing on rocks and a red panda climbing trees during the opening of the new Panda Trek exhibit.

The takins, including 1-month-old Duli, followed the sounds of a cow bell down a hillside into their new home. These shaggy animals, which look half goat and half antelope, were trained by Conny Carson, senior keeper, to shift from one yard to another using a bell. She applied this training to lead the herd - with the help of biscuits - through a tunnel, a hillside habitat and finally into one of two yards designed especially for them.

The ¾-acre Panda Trek was constructed in what was previously a space that housed a trailer with office space. The $2 million project created new living space that mimics China's bamboo forest for the takin, red panda and Mang Mountain pit viper. Meandering past these animals, as well as eight species of bamboo, visitors can learn more about the diversity of plants and animals found within the giant panda's forest home before reaching the black-and-white bear.

The takin depends on the same mountainous habitat as the giant panda and is also considered a national treasure in the People's Republic of China. The takin habitat in Panda Trek includes hillsides that mimic its natural environment, giving the animals places to climb and jump as Duli, the young calf, did on Tuesday.

The San Diego Zoo received a small group of takins in 1987 and 1988. Duli, the young female calf, is the 51st takin born at the Zoo since 1989, when the Zoo celebrated the first Sichuan takin birth outside of China. Within China, the takin has been given full protection under its laws and two reserves have been created for their protection.

The giant panda also shares its native habitat with the red panda. Like the giant panda, the red panda's diet consists mostly of bamboo, however, the red panda also eats fruit, roots, acorns and eggs. Both are classified as carnivores. The first red panda arrived at the San Diego Zoo in 1940, and in 1941 the first red panda was born. The Zoo will continue its participation in the Species Survival Plan breeding program when a male red panda joins the Zoo's female, Lily, later this year. The Zoo also contributes financially to red panda conservation programs.

Panda Trek will also be home in the near future to another special Chinese animal most zoogoers do not see: the Mang Mountain pit viper. This snake's vibrant green-and-brown markings give it camouflage in the forest vegetation.

CARLSBAD, Calif. (Aug 3, 2011) – LEGOLAND® California is taking the biggest kids’ Halloween celebration in San Diego to new heights this year! Fireworks are being added to the already “brick-tacular” line up that Brick-or-Treat Party Nights offers every Saturday night in October. Returning fan favorites include the interactive show “Mail Order Monsters,” Brick-or-Treat Trails and, of course, SEA LIFE™ Carlsbad Aquarium gets into the spirit with its own Brick-or-Treat Trail Bonus station.

Every Saturday and Sunday in October (Oct. 1 & 2, 8 & 9, 15 & 16, 22 & 23, 29 and 30), children 12 and under can trick-or-treat on the Brick-or-Treat Trail in the Enchanted Walk gathering goodies such as LEGO® Club Magazine, delicious treats and other surprises.  This kid-sized cul-de-sacs features seven LEGO-themed treat stations and offer a safe, fun and entertaining trick-or-treating experience.

Then every Saturday in October from 5 to 9 p.m., the family theme park transforms into a not-too-spooky Halloween haven for Brick-or-Treat Party Nights featuring costume contests, nighttime trick-or-treating on one of two Brick or Treat Trails, festive music, entertainment, interaction with the “Boo Crew”, the animated light show “Spirits of Halloween” after sundown and fireworks cap off the night at 9 p.m. Several monstrously fun areas of LEGOLAND are open late for Party Nights Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29, including Land of Adventure, Castle Hill, the Imagination Zone and Park favorites Coastersaurus, Safari Trek and Fairy Tale Brook. Children will also love interacting with the “Boo Crew” including Silly Scarecrows, Howlin’ Howie, Jester Funny Bones and Count Brickula as they “boo-gie” down during Party Nights.

At SEA LIFE Aquarium, the Southern California Tide Pool is spooked with a bonus Brick-or-Treat station. Kids will receive candy and other surprises while learning about the “monsters” of the deep every Saturday and Sunday in October.

The much-anticipated costume contest returns to Brick-or-Treat Party Nights where children 12 and under show off their costumes in three categories including Heroes, LEGO-themed and Creative.  Prize packages including LEGOLAND Resort Memberships and souvenirs, LEGO toys and gifts are awarded to the winner in each category.

In the live stage show, “Mail Order Monsters”, 10-year old Princess Playwright orders some delightfully scary monsters for the Brick-or-Treat celebration but the mischievous Jester Funny Bones conjures up a spell to make the monsters as sweet as candy. Guests have to help the Princess retrain her monsters and break the spell − all in time for the big Halloween celebration!

A Peek Inside Grimes Castle...

TPAer AJ Dana took a peek inside Grimes Castle's maze, The Dungeon, in Carson City, Nevada. Luckily, he survived to share this video clip with the rest of you! Billed as one of Northern Nevada's premiere haunted attractions, Grimes Castle is definitely something you should check out if you're in the area come Halloween time! Be sure to tell them you heard about them on Theme Park Adventure - not that it will increase your chances of survival much!

A special thanks to AJ and the folks at Grimes Castle for allowing us to come inside - happy haunting!
