WHOLE NEW LEVEL OF CUTENESS TAKES HOLD IN SAN DIEGO ZOO SAFARI PARK PETTING KRAAL

Kids Love Meeting New Kids

The Petting Kraal at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park got a whole new feel this week when it re-opened with new, cuddly animals for children to enjoy. With three kinds of small goats, the Petting Kraal has become a place where kids meet kids!

There are now six Boer goats, nine pygmy goats and two Nubian goats in the Petting Kraal. Having domesticated animals in the Petting Kraal, rather than the Eld's deer, Persian gazelle and blackbuck antelope, allows children to be more hands-on with the animals. At least three more pygmy goats that were born on July 14 will join the fun in the next few months.

"Children who come to the Petting Kraal at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park will be able to feed and brush the goats," said Danielle Leffler, a Safari Park mammal keeper. "The goats all have very distinct personalities and can be pretty goofy at times."

The deer and gazelle that were in the Petting Kraal have new homes at the Park. The seven Eld's deer live in the Central African field exhibit and one of the Persian gazelles is in the 60-acre Asian Plains field exhibit. The blackbuck antelope and the other Persian gazelle are now nannies to baby animals in the Park's nursery. The change of animals was made after the Petting Kraal shrank slightly to accommodate a larger rhino nursery.

The Petting Kraal is open from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. daily at the Park. Additionally, children will love the many activities and performances during the Safari Park's Summer Safari: African Extravaganza, which is being held through Aug. 21. During the celebration, the Park is open until 7 each night. Children can create beaded necklaces and decorate safari hats in the African Activities Plaza with African artisans. Also, from 4 to 7 p.m. each day, guests will have an opportunity to make their own African music. Ethiopian pole climbers spin and leap. Tanzanian and Kenyan acrobats turn into human pyramids and go very, very low with the limbo. A singer from Guyana belts out beautiful music, and a South African drummer beats an enchanting rhythm.

THERE'S NO MONKEYING AROUND AT SAN DIEGO ZOO WHEN THIS LITTLE GAL IS HUNGRY

Small, Orange Baby Needs A Few Bottles Each Day

A baby silvered leaf monkey benefits from a little human care at the San Diego Zoo.  The female was born on July 3 to a first-time mother. Unfortunately her mother was not holding the newborn in a way that allowed her to nurse naturally, so animal care staff intervened and nursery keepers are bottle-feeding the baby several times each day.  The small, orange monkey continues to spend time with her family between feedings so that social bonds remain strong.

This is the first time that this species of monkey has been hand-raised at the San Diego Zoo.  Although charting new territory, the baby is doing well.  Silvered leaf monkeys are a rare species from Asia.  Babies are born with orange fur that becomes more silver in color as they mature.

Eli Roth's Hostel: Hunting Season to be New Maze at Universal Studios Hollywood Halloween Horror Nights

Universal City, CA -- Eli Roth, the multi-talented director, writer, producer and actor, will adapt his enormously successful “Hostel” film franchise to create “Eli Roth’s Hostel: Hunting Season,” a twisted new “Halloween Horror Nights® maze at Universal Studios HollywoodSM. The event begins on September 23 and continues on select nights through October 31.

“Hostel:  Hunting Season,” for which Universal will build elaborate sets re-creating locations in Slovakia, will mark the horror auteur and star’s first effort at transforming his screen work into a live theme park experience.  The maze will re-imagine the film’s dehumanizing torture chambers and send guests on a spiraling journey through the corrupt halls of Elite Hunting’s torture factory.  Elite Hunting, a secret society that tortures and kills American youth for sport in exchange for large sums of money, will prowl the factory and prey on its many maze visitors.

Eli Roth, said: "Creating a maze for ‘Halloween Horror Nights’ is a horror fan's dream come true. I’ve been visiting ‘Halloween Horror Nights’ for years, and still remember the heart-pounding terror of going through the mazes for the first time.  For me it was like going inside the world of a movie and experiencing it in a visceral environment that simply cannot be replicated, and in subsequent years I've found I'm just as scared as I was the first time.

“I am so happy to join forces with the creative team at Universal.  Our collaborative vision to bring ‘Hostel’ to life will give both fans of my movie and horror fans a scare they could never have imagined.  People will have a chance to experience some exact moments from their favorite ‘Hostel’ scenes, along with some new surprises.

“ I was honored to receive an Eyegore Award at last year’s ‘Halloween Horror Nights’ event, and began talking to Universal about a ‘Hostel’ maze even  then.  This is something I’ve dreamed of for years.  I may even dress up and appear in the maze one night as a torturer.  So when you say ‘I scared you,’ you can literally mean that I scared you!"

In addition to the “Hostel” franchise, Eli Roth is well-known to film audiences as the writer-director-producer of “Cabin Fever” and as the baseball bat-wielding co-star of Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglorious Basterds,” for which he won a Screen Actor’s Guild Award.  As a producer, his film “The Last Exorcism” was a box office smash and he is currently in post-production on the “Clown” and “The Man With the Iron Fists,” both of which are slated for release in the coming months.

Eli Roth is the first star to be announced as a collaborator in this year’s Halloween Horror Nights event and will be a key member of a Hollywood horror “dream team” assembled by Universal Studios Hollywood to create the ultimate “live” Halloween nightmare.  He is also serving as a judge in Universal Studios Hollywood’s annual “Halloween Horror Nights” short film competition, which will culminate in a presentation to a winning filmmaker during the “Eyegore Awards” on the event’s opening night, September 23.  “The Thing: Assimilation,” a new maze inspired by Universal Pictures’ upcoming thriller, has also been announced and will add to the Hollywood horror clout.

“Halloween Horror Nights” 2011 will bring unprecedented star power to an array of unrivaled, film production quality mazes uniquely themed to today’s most definitive horror properties and deliver the most compelling, spine-chilling, haunted attractions.  All-new terror filled “scare zones,” original shows and the popular “Terror Tram” will be among the ““Halloween Horror Nights” offerings.  Additional new content for the 2011 “Halloween Horror Nights” mazes and attractions will be announced shortly.

US Navy Comes Ashore at Knott’s Berry Farm

Knott’s to be one of the designated locations for Navy Week Activities

Buena Park, CA – Knott’s Berry Farm is proud to welcome the US Navy on July 31st as part of the Los Angeles Navy Week celebration.  Festivities for the day include performances by the Navy Band, a Navy simulator interactive educational display and a special presentation by the Navy Parachute Team, “Leap Frogs.”

The U.S. Navy Parachute Demonstration Team, the “Leap Frogs,” is a fourteen-man team comprised entirely of U.S. Navy SEAL and SWCC personnel.  The “Leap Frog” performance displays the team’s skills as they leap out of an aircraft at an altitude of 12,500 feet.  During free fall, jumpers reach speeds of 120 mph and can accelerate up to 180 mph by pulling their arms to their sides and straightening their legs into what is called a “track.”  The jumpers open their parachutes around 5,000 feet by releasing a smaller pilot chute.  After deploying their chutes, the Leap Frogs fly their canopies together to build dramatic formations.  After their performance, the Leap Frogs will make themselves available to guests to answer questions about the Navy and Naval Seal Warfare community, as well as to sign autographs.

The Navy Simulator is a 12 –passenger mobile unit featuring live-action Navy films programmed to move in sync with point-of-view imagery presented on a large screen.  The Navy Simulator will give guests a firsthand, interactive experience that will provide a glimpse into the life of a Navy sailor.

This event will be at 12 noon in our multi-purpose room.  We are almost full already, so PLEASE CALL 260.563.9070 to make a reservation soon if you plan on attending!

Additional Event with Mr. Thom!  He will also speak at 6:30 pm in the Honeywell Room at the Honeywell Center .  During the evening speech, he will explain his research methods, how he chooses his subjects, and a bit about some of his books.  No reservations are required for this event.

(Mr. Thom’s mother was from Wabash .  He remembers attending a funeral here at which the entire honor guard was made up of Civil War veterans.  I can’t wait to hear more from him about this.)

We have paperback copies of The Red Heart and Follow the River in the museum gift shop.  (Now there is a good way to spend a hot afternoon—reading!)

Saturday July 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Oh, we are excited about this summer’s Family Fun Day!  Our theme is “ Wabash County in 1812.”  We have scheduled River Rogue Pirates, a Cannon Crew, and a Silhouette Cutter.  We will have a special demonstration of a Spinning Wheel and a display of 1812-replica clothing.  A local arrowhead expert is bringing in his large collection of arrowheads.  Indian Life and Military Camp Life will be explained by re-enactors.  And, if the weather permits, we will have special activities outside too—tug-o-war, candle-making and a wood-carving demonstration.

Please note the special activities are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The entire museum, of course, will be open until 4 pm.  Admission is free for members or with a paid daily admission.

This Family Fun Day is sponsored by:

Dr. Gary Adsit, Riverside Podiatry, Marion , Indiana

Historic Harleys:  The Antique Motorcycles of Brandt’s Harley-Davidson

For those of you who ride, you’ll fall in love with these old-time beauties.  For those of you (like me) who aren’t as familiar with motorcycles, you’ll love the history and stories that go along with each one.  You’ll see the craftsmanship that makes Harley-Davidson more than a premium brand.  If you haven’t seen the exhibit yet, don’t wait any longer!  Although the exhibit is here until January 8, if you come now, you just might fall in love so deeply you’ll want to buy your own HOG and spend the rest of the summer out riding!

Something New in the Gift Shop

I have always admired Whetstone Woodenware when I’ve run across it at places like the Indiana Historical Society, Williamsburg , and Whetstone shop at Winona Lake .  Now the Wabash County Historical Museum carries their hand-crafted wooden items too!  We have a great selection of wooden spoons, cutting boards, spreaders, biscuit cutters, etc.  These items make great hostess gifts.  Stop by and have a look.  There is no entrance fee to the gift shop!

Hope to see you at the museum soon…and often!

TIGER CUBS PRACTICE PROWLING, POUNCING AT SAN DIEGO ZOO

Two tiger cubs pounced on their mom and wrestled with each other this morning at the San Diego Zoo. The Malayan tigers, Connor and Christopher, stick fairly close to their mother, Mek, but Connor has proved to be the most independent of the two cubs and often leads explorations, waiting for Connor to catch up.

"Connor and Christopher are really different - Connor from day one has always been the most bold," said Rochelle Willison, senior keeper, San Diego Zoo. "Connor marches out on exhibit first and comes in first for training sessions. Connor is a little bit more advanced and eats more than his brother. Whereas Christopher hangs back a little and he's a little quieter."

The cubs are the third litter for their mother and are the fourth and fifth cubs fathered by Paka at the Zoo. Born on April 2, 2011, the duo has been venturing onto exhibit from 9 a.m. to noon since mid-July. The cubs are named after the sons of a donor to San Diego Zoo Global.

While still nursing, the cubs have started eating small amounts of carnivore diet from animal care staff.  Keepers are also watching the mother's diet because she is allowing the young cubs to take some of her food. As Connor and Christopher get older, Mek will become less tolerant of this. The cubs are expected to nurse for another four weeks.

Like all tiger species, Malayan tigers are endangered. Less than 400 Malayan tigers remain the wild. For many years, tigers have been hunted for their fur and other body parts, some of which are used in native medicines. Several traditional medicines use tiger parts as a cure for all kinds of illnesses, from pimples to toothaches. These "cures" have never been proven to be effective. Tigers also suffer from habitat loss. When people move into areas where tigers live, tigers are forced into smaller and smaller areas where there may not be enough food for the big cats to survive.

Guests Will Experience the Fear of the Film at Both Universal Studios Florida and Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights Events Before “The Thing” Hits Theatres

ORLANDO, Fla.,  UNIVERSAL CITY, Ca. (July 19, 2011) — An abandoned scientific research facility in the midst of a vast and frozen Antarctica will set the stage for “The Thing,” an all-new horror maze inspired by Universal Pictures’ upcoming film, at both Universal Studios Florida and Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights events, which begins on September 23 and continues on select nights through October 31. In the thriller “The Thing,” paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they’re infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet.

The new haunted house will offer guests an unprecedented first-hand preview of the much-anticipated thriller in advance of its October 14 release. Guests will find themselves in a series of face-to-face encounters with “The Thing,” an alien creature that can transform itself into an exact replica of any living being. “The Thing” maze will recreate the spine-chilling suspense from the film, confronting guests with the paranoia and fear that comes from being trapped inside the film’s Antarctic Thule station. The shape-shifting alien could be anywhere or anything.  Will they survive?

Eerily authentic, “The Thing” maze will feature elaborately designed and disturbingly real alien creatures and sets. They will match the film’s terrifying intensity and provoke both a memorable and disturbing experience. Universal’s theme parks have partnered with the film’s producers, Strike Entertainment’s Marc Abraham and Eric Newman (Dawn of the Dead) to create an experience that is authentic to the film. The sets, audio, musical score, creature and character references are all based on the thriller.

“We want people to live the film and experience the same terror that affects the film’s characters,” said Newman. “Our collaboration with Universal’s creative teams brought the vision of the film to life.  We’re excited for Halloween Horror Nights guests to experience ‘The Thing’ in this frighteningly real way.”

Young Dain loves LEGOLAND and Star Wars and often visits LEGOLAND with his mom, Megan, and his "daddy doll” – a doll he carries to remember his father while he is away on military deployment. With mom’s help, Dain frequently took photos with his daddy doll and sent them to his father in Afghanistan.

Dain was shocked when his daddy doll was replaced with the real thing – his dad. Sparks had returned from Afghanistan on Wednesday and his wife wanted the father and son reunion to be really special. Both father and son share a huge love of LEGO® and Star Wars so Megan Sparks enlisted the help of the family theme park to reunite the two.

“It’s been six months since I’ve actually been able to hold him and give him a hug,” Sparks commented as he anxiously waited to surprise his son. “It will be awesome to be able to tell him I love him face-to-face. He’s gotten a lot bigger and he’s talking so much better than when I last saw him.”

Lots of hugs, kisses and even some tears – happy ones – flowed as dad stepped into Dain’s picture and scooped his son into his arms. Dain was anxious to show his dad around Star Wars Miniland. After the reunion, the family spent the remainder of the day enjoying their time in the Park and also made a visit to LEGOLAND® Water Park.

SNOW FALLS IN JULY AT SAN DIEGO ZOO

The San Diego Zoo's three polar bears were greeted by 18 tons of snow and lots of smiling donors when they walked into their exhibit this morning. Kalluk, the male, quickly bounded to the top of one snow mound and spread himself flat as a pancake, rubbing and wiggling in the snow. Females Tatqiq and Chinook started digging in the snow and eating the icy treat that filled their habitat. Soon, they were wrestling with each other, diving into their pool and belly-crawling across the slippery ice. The bears even found some of their other toys and buried them in holes they dug in the snow.

More than 90 donors contributed a total of $5100 to the Zoo's online Animal Care Wish List to provide the special enrichment activity for the bears. The wish list is like an online gift registry for animals at the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park. It is updated monthly and can be found at sandiegozoo.org/wishlist.

Polar Bear Plunge was renovated in 2010 to show how polar bears live in the Arctic and addresses the threats they're facing due to climate change. Guests have the chance to walk in the paw prints of the largest bears on Earth and learn how they survive in the harsh Arctic climate, what -and how much - they eat and how humans can improve the species' chances of survival.

The 100-acre San Diego Zoo is dedicated to the conservation of endangered species and their habitats. The organization focuses on conservation and research work around the globe, educates millions of individuals a year about wildlife and maintains accredited horticultural, animal, library and photo collections.  The Zoo also manages the 1,800-acre San Diego Zoo Safari Park (historically referred to as the Wild Animal Park), which includes a 900-acre native species reserve, and the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research.  The important conservation and science work of these entities is supported in part by The Foundation of the Zoological Society of San Diego.

Knott’s Berry Farm Theme Park Attempts Guinness Book World Record

Guests will be grinning from ear to ear as they attempt to
set record for corn husking

BUENA PARK, CA -- Knott’s Berry Farm will attempt to set a record for the largest number of people husking corn on Thursday, July 14.  The record setting attempt is part of Knott’s parent company, Cedar Fair Entertainment’s partnership with Guinness Worlds Record’s new division, GWR Live!  This partnership includes a summer-long series of interactive events at Cedar Fair Amusement Park’s across the country.

“Knott’s Berry Farm chose a corn husking event because it really takes us back to our roots as a farm,” says Marty Keithley, Knott’s Berry Farm’s general manager.  “Knott’s Berry Farm founders Walter and Cordelia Knott came to Buena Park in the 1920’s to make a living farming, and for a time corn was one of their crops.”  Today the park offers over 165 rides, shows and attractions, though it still offers corn in the famous Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner Restaurant.  “If it weren’t for the family farm, and later the family restaurant, we would not have Knott’s Berry Farm theme park today,” added Keithley.

The opportunity to be a part of the Guinness Book World Record Event will be open to all paid park guests on the 14th, as space allows.  “To set the record we need to have at least 250 people husking corn at one time, “ said Knott’s Berry Farm spokeswoman Jennifer Blazey, “but we will be prepared for as many as 500 participants.”  To sign up in advance for the event, send an e-mail to pr@knotts.com and place “corn husking” in the message line.  The event will take place in Knott’s Calico Square at 2:30 pm.

Knott’s Berry Farm is owned and operated by Cedar Fair Entertainment Company, a publicly traded partnership that is listed for trading on The New York Stock Exchange under the symbol “FUN.”  In addition to Knott’s Berry Farm, Cedar Fair owns and operates ten other amusement parks, six water parks, one indoor water park resort, and five hotels.  Cedar Fair also operates the Gilroy Gardens Family Theme Park in Gilroy, Calif. under a management contract.

FASTEST FEATURE AT SAN DIEGO ZOO SAFARI PARK DEBUTS FOR SUMMER SAFARI: AFRICA EXTRAVAGANZA

FASTEST FEATURE AT SAN DIEGO ZOO SAFARI PARK DEBUTS FOR
SUMMER SAFARI: AFRICA EXTRAVAGANZA

Shiley's Cheetah Run, Safari Park Summer Hours Begin July 2

Don't blink, or you just might miss it. Starting Saturday, July 2, the fastest land animal will be showing off its speed every day at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Shiley's Cheetah Run shows Safari Park guests the cheetah's astounding speed - 0 to 70 mph in just 4 seconds. Cheetah Run is part of the Park's extended-hours program, Summer Safari: African Extravaganza, which runs from July 2 to Aug. 21, during which the Park is open until 7 p.m.

Located near Lion Camp, Cheetah Run will take place at 5 p.m. daily, weather permitting, and is included with Park admission and membership. Cheetah Run is made possible through the generosity of local philanthropist Darlene Shiley and is named in honor of Shiley, one of the participating cheetahs.

There are three cheetahs who are trained to run off leash for Cheetah Run: Amara, Shiley and Johari. Each day, one of these cheetahs will run down a 330-foot straight track while chasing a mechanical lure attached to its favorite toy. Guests, who could be as close as 7 feet away, may feel the wind as the cheetah passes by.

"You are so close to the cheetahs here at the Safari Park," said Janet Rose-Hinostroza, animal training manager for the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. "You can hear them breathing; you can hear their claws ripping the sod as they go past you. It is an incredible, exhilarating experience."

In addition to Cheetah Run, this summer the Park features acrobats, a storyteller and an African chief as part of its African Extravaganza. The celebration begins as soon as visitors step onto the Park's front plaza, with the beat of an African drum setting the rhythm for adventure. Inside, Chief Kahle will provide a warm welcome, pose for pictures and hand each child their very own safari hat. Abantwana, the storyteller, will spin tales of African wildlife while guests play instruments that help the stories unfold.

Entertainers who dance, pole climb and hula hoop will lead guests to a high-energy show by the African Acrobats of Tanzania, which includes juggling, contortionism and amazing balancing acts. Guests can join African artisans to create beaded necklaces or decorate safari hats in the African Activities Plaza. From 4 to 7 p.m. each day, guests will have an opportunity to make African music. Robert the Zebra, a digitally animated equine who jokes with children, and interactive animal puppets are sure to bring smiles to young faces.

SEAWORLD AND BUSCH GARDENS GRANT MORE THAN $1 MILLION TO PROTECT ANIMALS IN NEED

ORLANDO, Fla. (June 30, 2011) – Animals in need and endangered species around the world will benefit from more than $1 million in grants awarded this year by the non-profit SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund. Since its creation eight years ago, the Fund has granted more than $8 million to protect wildlife and wild places.

The Fund approved grants to more than 100 wildlife protection projects including programs to reintroduce endangered cheetahs to the African wild, protect sea turtle nests across the world, educate and connect kids with the ocean, and help restore America’s fragile coasts.

“From big cats to penguins, these species are in dire need of help. SeaWorld and Busch Gardens work to educate and inspire guests to care about the plight of these animals, and these grants from the Fund support our conservation partners working in the field,” said Brad Andrews, president and executive director of the SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund and chief zoological officer for SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment. “Together, we can make a world of difference for these extraordinary species that share our world.”

Highlights of the more than 100 projects and organizations include:

Big Cats in Big Trouble
The big cats of the world are disappearing. There are fewer than 12,000 cheetahs throughout Africa and less than half the number of lions that were there only 50 years ago. The Fund is supporting seven conservation organizations around the world that work to stop the decline of big cats and identify conservation strategies for their future.

•    The Dell Cheetah Centre is researching and identifying ways to reintroduce South African cheetahs to the wild.
•    The Cheetah Conservation Fund provides field training of cheetah-scat detection dogs to help protect livestock from cheetah predation and educates local youth in Namibia, Africa to learn the importance of cheetahs in their eco-systems and culture.
•    Cheetah Outreach is implementing an educational program created to raise awareness of the threats cheetahs face in the wild.
•    Cheetah Conservation Botswana is developing methods for assessing cheetah and wild dog populations in the Kalahari region of Botswana, Africa.
•    World Wildlife Fund is working to save the critically endangered Sumatran Tiger.
•    Ewaso Lion Project is investigating the factors affecting the population dynamics of lions in and around local reserves in northern Kenya.
•    WildiZe Foundation addresses the numerous underlying causes for the lion's decline and involves local communities to reduce conflicts leading to the demise of these animals.

Penguins in Crisis
Of the world’s 17 species of penguins, 12 are rapidly declining due to a combination of changing weather patterns, overfishing, pollution and other factors. The Fund is playing a significant role in helping preserve these species, from supporting efforts to hand-raise hundreds of abandoned African penguin chicks to funding research that will help plan effective conservation efforts.

•    The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds is introducing hand-reared African penguin chicks into the wild to help stop the species’ decline.
•    The Penguin Project is led by researchers at the University of Washington conducting research to plan effective conservation efforts for the Magellanic penguin.

Saving Sea Turtles
All sea turtle species are endangered or threatened. The Fund supports many initiatives that protect sea turtles.

•    Sea Turtle, Incorporated protects Kemp’s ridley sea turtle nests in South Padre Island, Texas, part of the species’ only nesting beach.

One Ocean
When the ocean’s health is compromised, so is the health of both animals and humans. No matter where people live, the ocean is a life support system and provides much of the food, water and oxygen needed to survive. The Fund is supporting several initiatives that will help preserve or restore oceans and fragile coasts for future generations.

•    The University of Florida is one of the key research partners for SeaWorld’s Rising Tide, a program that will provide a sustainable tropical fish population and decrease the dependency on coral reef collections for home aquariums.
•    Restore America's Estuaries preserves and restores coastal estuaries. The Fund’s grant will help restoration efforts in Florida and Texas.
•    Brevard Zoo, located in Central Florida, restores oyster beds on Florida’s east coast.
•    The Ocean Foundation’s Ocean Connectors gives school children in San Diego and Mexico the opportunity to witness and learn about marine life firsthand.

Plant-ing Seed Money at Fairytale Town

Shirley Plant honored as 2011 recipient of the "Make It Happen Award"

If there is one person who knows how to make something happen it is Shirley Plant. She is the 2011 recipient of the "Make It Happen Award" presented by the Melena and Enlow A. Ose Endowment for the Arts of the Sacramento Region Community Foundation. The annual award honors local volunteer leaders in the arts community who are dedicated to promoting the arts in the Sacramento Region. In May, Shirley received a $15,000 grant to be presented in her honor, for a charity of her choice. Shirley has selected Fairytale Town as the recipient of the grant.

Shirley's prestigious award is not the first time her work has visibly affected Fairytale Town. Though she has been involved with numerous Sacramento area cultural institutions, her history with Fairytale Town is an especially devoted one. Shirley has supported Fairytale Town for more than 30 years, from the time it was built and even on the anniversary of its 50th birthday. Her work for the park is both considerable and diverse, raising funds and strengthening the board of directors as well as writing and performing in numerous children's plays.

Upon receiving the award, Shirley stated: "The magnanimous Ose Endowment (Award) is just a dream come true, and brings all our hopes and plans over the years to full circle. (I) pledge to continue my love affair with Fairytale Town and my devotion to its mission."

Her latest project is the Yellow Brick Road outside of the front gates. The Yellow Brick Road was her brainchild and allowed thousands of individuals to commemorate special occasions, honor and memorialize loved ones and create more public awareness for the park. The funds raised by the project will be used to fund park improvements and programs.

Kathy Fleming, Executive Director of Fairytale Town, and the person who nominated Shirley for the award, said: "Shirley Plant has a 50-plus year history of supporting, leading and building arts organizations in Sacramento. She is a person who makes things happen, and in doing so makes things better."
