UNIVERSAL ORLANDO RESORT REVEALS MAJOR ATTRACTION NEWS

Blockbuster 3-D-CGI Feature “Despicable Me” to Become Attraction Experience at Universal Orlando

Plus, Incredible High-Tech Enhancements Underway for One of the World’s Most Popular Attractions:
The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man

Orlando, Fla. (May 19, 2011) – Universal Orlando Resort today announced that its newest attraction will be based on Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s blockbuster 3-D-CGI feature “Despicable Me,” bringing minions, mayhem and a whole new level of 3-D family fun to its guests.  The “Despicable Me” experience will replace the Jimmy Neutron attraction at Universal Studios Florida.

Universal also announced that The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, one of the greatest attractions in theme park history, will be completely reanimated in 4K digital high definition – once again redefining the theme park experience.

Both will open in 2012 and are being developed by the same award-winning Universal Creative team that has brought all of Universal Orlando’s spectacularly themed attractions to life.  Both will utilize brand-new, highly sophisticated Infitec 3-D projection systems designed to make the experience sharper, clearer and more “real” than ever before.

DESPICABLE ME

With a worldwide gross of more than $540 million, 2010’s “Despicable Me,” from directors Chris Renaud & Pierre Coffin, is the sixth most successful film that Universal Pictures has ever distributed.  It is now the 10th-biggest animated film in U.S. history.  The 3-D animated adventure thrilled audiences across the globe with its outrageous humor, endearing characters and compelling storyline – all of which guests will be able to experience exclusively at Universal Orlando in 2012.

“Despicable Me” will become the first-ever Universal animated film to be transformed into a theme park experience.  The Universal Creative team is working closely with producer Chris Meledandri, the founder of Illumination Entertainment, to create all-new animation for an all-new “Despicable Me” adventure that places guests right in the center of the action.

Gru, one of the world’s greatest super-villains, is bringing his high-tech empire – and his three adopted daughters – to Universal Studios, and he is looking for all the help he can get.  First, he will transform guests into an army of mischievous, scene-stealing minions.  Then he will train them.  And that kicks off an unforgettable ride experience that creates a hysterical mix of chaos and family fun.

Guests will:

·        laugh as they embark on an entirely-new, high-tech 3-D digital adventure with their favorite characters from the film – Gru, daughters Margo, Edith and Agnes, and of course, Gru’s not-so-bright pit crew, the minions

·        marvel as they explore Gru’s lair and descend into his secret lab

·        shriek as the entire family is transformed into minions

·        celebrate as they are swept into a first-ever, minion-inspired, interactive dance party where they can show off their best moves

“The ‘Despicable Me’ attraction is the latest example of how we tap into pop culture’s most compelling stories and turn them into extraordinary theme park entertainment,” said Mark Woodbury, president of Universal Creative.  “This is a perfect fit for Universal Orlando, and we can’t wait to bring this one-of-a-kind experience to life.”

“As we write, design and animate our films at Illumination, it is our singular goal to bring to life endearing and, hopefully, enduring characters,” said Chris Meledandri.  “With the creation of next year’s ‘Despicable Me’ attraction at Universal Orlando, audiences will be able to immerse themselves in Gru’s world for many years to come.”

THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF SPIDER-MAN

Already one of the most popular and innovative theme park attractions ever created, The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man at Universal’s Islands of Adventure continues to raise the bar for theme park entertainment – combining advanced motion-based ride vehicles, 3-D digital film and live special effects to create an unparalleled ride experience.  It is widely acknowledged as one of the best theme park experiences in the world – and it’s about to get mind-blowingly better.

The newly reanimated, high-definition experience will unfold within the attraction’s towering visual spaces – taking on even larger than larger-than-life proportions.  The new digital animation – combined with the new Infitec system and new set enhancements – will transform what is already one of the most technologically advanced attractions ever created into what will feel like an all-new experience.

Facts about the enhanced ride experience:

·         All-new digital animation done in 4K high definition – the highest HD resolution available

·         The new HD animation will allow guests to experience details they’ve never been able to before – from the flames spewing from Hobgoblin’s pumpkins to the electricity arching through Electro’s body to the stitching on Spider-Man’s gloves.

·         To take advantage of new HD clarity and detail, Universal Orlando is adding entirely new details to the film – and leaving it up to guests to find them.

“Guests will not believe their eyes when they experience the new Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man,” said Thierry Coup, senior vice president of the Universal Creative Studio.  “We are talking about a larger-than-life environment and the HD animation will make it even more remarkable than it has been.  It will seem brand-new.”

Universal Orlando Resort Celebrates New Attraction Announcement

SCIENTISTS STUDYING SONGBIRD AT SAN DIEGO ZOO SAFARI PARK

SAN PASQUAL VALLEY, CA - On the 900-acre Biodiversity Preserve at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, away from tourists, a group of scientists listen intently for the distinctive song of the cactus wren, a call that sounds like a sewing machine. In the name of conservation, they keep an eye on nests and wait for a bird to surface.

U.S. Geological Survey, Nature Reserve of Orange County and San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research scientists were at the Safari Park as part of an ongoing study focusing on habitat restoration and understanding population dynamics of a species protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and is listed as a California Species of Special Concern. The research conducted at the Safari Park will contribute to an ongoing USGS effort investigating how habitat fragmentation impacts wildlife populations throughout Southern California and Nevada.

"Our goal in this research is to determine how connected cactus wren populations are to one another and to be able to use this information to inform cactus wren habitat restoration projects," said Barbara Kus, Ph.D., U.S. Geological Survey Western Ecological Research Center research ecologist. "We can then determine where additional connectivity is needed and make recommendations to guide cactus-planting scenarios that will eventually connect patches."

In 2007, the Witch Creek wildfire that devastated San Diego County also wreaked havoc on the coastal cactus wren's habitat. At the Safari Park alone, 600 acres burned, reducing the available cactus scrub, a rare habitat this wren species relies on year round. In Southern California the cactus wren is declining and becoming isolated due to urbanization and habitat loss.

On Monday, a biologist's hands swiftly affixed tiny metal bands on a cactus wren while feathers were collected for a genetic analysis of the population. Understanding the biology and habitat requirements of this species is an important part of ensuring proper habitat restoration and the cactus wren's ability to rebound.

San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research scientists have been meticulously restoring cactus scrub at the Safari Park Biodiversity Preserve while monitoring the bird's abundance, distribution, survivorship and productivity. The natural recovery of the cactus scrub habitat has been very slow and in some areas has been further hampered by the invasion of nonnative grasses.

"Cactus wrens only make nests in prickly pear or cholla catcus greater than 3 feet in height. Without it, they cannot survive," said Bryan Endress, Ph.D., San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research director of Applied Animal Ecology. "Native cactus and coastal sage scrub habitat is not only beneficial to cactus wrens but also supports a wide range of other native wildlife, and this is one of the reasons San Diego County is globally known as a biodiversity hotspot."

The multi-disciplinary and multi-agency study's goal is to add to the knowledge of this species before it becomes endangered. Little is known about the coastal cactus wren and its habitat needs or best practices for restoring cactus scrub habitat.

"Through this collaborative effort, we hope to determine the needs and requirements of this species to aid in its recovery," said Lisa Nordstrom, Ph.D., San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research scientist. "We are also monitoring cactus wrens at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park Biodiversity Preserve to confirm that our restoration efforts are having a positive effect on their population."

The San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research is dedicated to generating, sharing and applying scientific knowledge vital to the conservation of animals, plants and habitats worldwide. The work of the Institute includes onsite research efforts at the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park (historically referred to as Wild Animal Park), laboratory work at the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center for Conservation Research, and international field programs involving more than 235 researchers working in 35 countries. In addition to the Beckman Center for Conservation Research, the Institute also operates the Anne and Kenneth Griffin Reptile Conservation Center, the Frozen Zoo(TM) and Native Seed Gene Bank, the Keauhou and Maui Hawaiian Bird Conservation Centers, Cocha Cashu Biological Research Station, and the Desert Tortoise Conservation Center. The Zoo also manages the 1,800-acre San Diego Zoo Safari Park, which includes a 900-acre biodiversity reserve, and the San Diego Zoo. The important conservation and science work of these entities is supported in part by The Foundation of the Zoological Society of San Diego.

Universal Orlando Resort Announces All-New Hollywood Drive-In Miniature Golf Experience Coming To CityWalk

Guests Can “Hit the Links” by Early 2012 With Two 18-Hole Courses Based on the Classic Drive-In Movie Era

Orlando, Fla.  (May 11, 2011) – Universal Orlando Resort today announced plans to premier an all-new, 36-hole miniature golf experience – Hollywood Drive-In Golf – at CityWalk by early 2012. The experience is being designed by Universal’s creative team to do for miniature golf what a blockbuster theme park attraction does for a movie:  bring it alive in an entirely new way. The two state-of-the art 18-hole courses will be unlike any other mini golf experience.

Inspired by the classic drive-in movie era, guests will be whisked into an elaborately-themed environment based on the vintage horror flicks and “little green men” science fiction films of the 1950s. As they experience two family friendly courses, “The Haunting of Ghostly Greens” and “Invaders From Planet Putt,” guests will putt their way through elaborate movie-style scenes, passing through a cemetery, under a giant spider, through a flying saucer and into the basement lab in a haunted house. Cutting-edge interactive elements and special effects will immerse guests further into the “double feature,” and with LED course edge-lighting they can play day, night and late night.

The new experience is being developed to complement Universal CityWalk’s role as an entertainment hub with something for everyone.

“We created Hollywood Drive-In to be fun and different and something everyone can enjoy,” said Ric Florell, senior vice president and general manager of resort revenue operations. “We used creative theming and state-of-the-art technology to take the experience to the next level. It’s perfect for Universal CityWalk – whether you are playing at 11am or 11pm.”

Situated just below the first level of CityWalk and next to the AMC Cineplex, guests will see the miniature golf courses as they are entering CityWalk from the parking garages. Construction on Hollywood Drive-In Golf is scheduled to begin this summer and the venue will open by early 2012.

TEENAGERS MEET CHALLENGE FROM POLAR BEARS INTERNATIONAL TO REDUCE C02 IN THEIR COMMUNITIES

SeaWorld San Diego, San Diego Zoo Honor Finalists in Project Polar Bear Contest

April 29, 2011 (SAN DIEGO) Four teams of conservation-minded teens from across the country will gather in San Diego on April 30th for an Awards Ceremony for Project Polar Bear, a national contest hosted by Polar Bears International (PBI), the world’s leading polar bear conservation group. The four teams—from North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin—are finalists in a contest that encourages teens to create and carry out projects that reduce carbon emissions.

The Grand Prize team and their advisor will win a trip to Churchill, the polar bear capital of the world, to see polar bears in the wild, but the teens’ passionate commitment to CO2 reductions goes far beyond that.  As one of the contestants said, “It doesn’t matter if we win or lose—what we’re doing is so important.”

This year competing teams rallied their communities to prevent more than 30 million pounds of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere. Along the way, they raised awareness about the importance of reducing greenhouse gases to help save polar bear habitat and inspired entire communities to reduce their carbon footprint.

·       The AHS Zoo School of North Carolina conducted energy audits to help individuals and businesses cut back on power usage, rewarding participants with donated packs of CFL bulbs.

·       The Care Bears of Ohio created a My Actions website that promotes simple CO2-reducing actions and calculates their impact.  They collected hundreds of pledges from as far away as Hungary, plus from local residents and 33,000 boy scouts.

·         The Earth Club of Wisconsin focused on recycling and planting trees, attracting more than 200 volunteers for a tree-planting day and distributing their distinctive Polar Bearrels (used Coca-Cola barrels turned into recycling bins) around town.

·         The Energy Angels of Pennsylvania raised money for CFL light bulb giveways (more than 2,000 total) and energy-saving kits; they also held numerous outreach events to inform and inspire audiences, collect pledges, and distribute bulbs and kits.

“These teens know that the fate of our iconic polar bear is up to each of us,” says PBI President Robert Buchanan. “Their actions and attitudes have already helped reduce carbon emissions and motivate change—and that makes everyone who competed a winner in our book.”

The four finalist teams and their adult advisors earned a trip to San Diego for the Awards Ceremony In recognition of their accomplishments. It will be held at SeaWorld San Diego on April 30, 2011. During the ceremony, PBI will announce the Grand Prize and Second Place winners. Grand Prize is a trip to Churchill to see polar bears. Second Prize is a Beluga Encounter at SeaWorld. All finalists will receive free admission and a VIP Tour at SeaWorld and the San Diego Zoo.

The contest was hosted by PBI, sponsored by Lowepro, and supported by regional zoos and aquariums including the North Carolina Zoo, the Cincinnati Zoo, and the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium. These zoo are part of PBI’s network of Arctic Ambassador Center Zoos, centers that focus on animal well-being and enrichment, take a leadership role in stewardship and carbon-reduction efforts in their communities, and participate in PBI polar bear research efforts. Many also help support polar bear conservation through the PBI Polar Bear Sustainability Alliance.

PBI received dozens of contest entries from across the nation. Registration for the 2011 contest is October 1-31, 2011. To learn more about the contest and to read the blogs of competing teams, visit www.polarbearsinternational/programs/project-polar-bear.

ANIMAL CARE BECOMES PART OF THE GUEST EXPERIENCE AT BUSCH GARDENS TAMPA BAY

New State of the Art Facility Educates Guests,  Offers One-Of-A-Kind Access To Park’s World-Class Animal Care

TAMPA, Fla. (May 4, 2011) – Busch Gardens will welcome guests to closely observe and even take part in the animal care experience when the Tampa park opens its new Animal Care & Nutrition Center this winter. From nutrition to treatments, X-rays to surgeries, much of Busch Gardens’ animal care will be conducted in guest view in this new state-of-the-art facility.

“We are proud of the care we provide our animals,” said Mike Boos, vice president of zoological operations. “We welcome the opportunity to share our level of care with our guests, and to continue our mission of connecting guests to animals and the natural world. No other zoological facility will offer the unique, up-close experience that this new facility will offer.”

The new, nearly 16,000 square-foot facility will be built where the rhino exhibit is currently located in the Nairobi area of the park. The park’s current animal care center is located behind the scenes.

“What many people probably don’t realize is that our veterinarians, technicians and animal care staff spend most of their day confirming the health of our animals by doing preventative efforts such as annual physicals and checkups,” said Bill Street, SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment Corporate Curator of Conservation and Education. “There are great lessons we can share with guests by offering this up-close look at our high level of animal care.”

The two major guest components of the new facility will be a nutrition center and treatment rooms. The nutrition center will feature a kitchen similar in set-up to a cooking show on television. Educators will lead demonstrations several times a day on the planning and preparation of animal diets.  Guests will even have the chance to assist in preparing and doling out the range of food the park provides its animals, from fruits and vegetables to crickets and mealworms.

The treatment center will allow guests to watch as Busch Gardens’ skilled vets do preventative checkups, treatments and surgeries on animals. Guests will be able to see into the rooms through glass walls, and audio capabilities will allow guests to talk to vets working behind the glass. Cameras placed over the exam table will show unique vantage points to guests who can watch on monitors. During treatments and surgeries, zoo educators will also be on hand to talk about what’s taking place.

In addition to the guest views, the new facility will also include animal recovery rooms, vet offices and research stations.

Guests can also participate in a diagnostic exercise by scanning an interactive activity card at several stations as they follow an animal from diagnosis to treatment to blood and lab work to a final outcome.

Busch Gardens, and its parent company, SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment, are world leaders in animal care. We care for more than 60,0000 animals, one of the world’s largest zoological collections. Busch Gardens Tampa cares for more than 2,000 animals representing 307 species.

SeaWorld Orlando’s Aviculture Team Pair Orphaned Chick with Rescued Sandhill Crane

A Cute Story of Sandhill Surrogacy

(Monday, April 25, 2011) Orlando, FL – While caring for two rescued sandhill cranes – an injured adult and an orphaned chick – SeaWorld’s aviculture team put their problem-solving skills to work to create a successful surrogacy.

A few weeks ago, an adult sandhill crane was brought to SeaWorld with a rubber gasket around his bill. Not only was the crane incapable of eating, but the proper growth of its bill was also in jeopardy.
Once SeaWorld’s veterinarians removed the gasket, the aviculture team spent weeks giving the sandhill around-the-clock care. Thankfully, the adult sandhill crane has had a right-on-schedule recovery, and he just so happened to make a friend while doing so.
While caring for the adult crane, SeaWorld’s team rescued a newly hatched sandhill crane chick. Years of experience told the team that if a chick isn’t around other cranes during its early months, the possibility of imprinting on a human increases, making it difficult to return the chick to the wild when ready.

The team came up with a unique solution:  Pair the two birds together.
It is sometimes difficult for orphaned chicks to be tolerated by older cranes that are not familiar with them, but when the adult crane was placed with the orphaned chick, they took an instant liking to each other. The adult sandhill is currently acting as a surrogate, and the fuzzy chick is mimicking and learning crane behaviors, just like it would in the wild.
Eric Reece, SeaWorld’s Supervisor of Aviculture, adds, “The fact that the adult crane took to the chick bodes well for the development of the chick. It is now growing and doing well.”
So what does the future hold for these two pals? SeaWorld Orlando’s Aviculture Team plans to release the adult and chick together, once the chick learns to fly and the adult is fully recovered.

The Cuban sandhill and Mississippi sandhill are both subspecies of cranes that are listed as endangered and are protected under the Endangered Species Act.
SeaWorld's animal rescue team is on call 24/7 to save and care for injured, orphaned or ill animals.
