Red Carpet Club

Thursday, April 28, 2011

6pm-8pm(ish)

Local author Gene Stratton-Porter’s books have been made into numerous films over the years, and some of these films are no longer available to the public. On April 28th, we be hosting Stratton-Porter expert Eric Grayson who will presenting the 1940 film version of Laddie. This was the third cinema adaptation of the heartwarming story by Stratton-Porter, following versions filmed in 1926 (in which Stratton-Porter herself played the role of “Little Sister”) and 1935. In the story, Laddie, a good-natured Indiana farmer falls in love with immigrant English girl Pamela. Though Pamela's irascible father intensely dislikes Laddie and his parents, hero and heroine manage to keep romance alive with the help of Laddie's hero-worshiping kid sister.

The character of Laddie is modeled after Stratton-Porter’s beloved brother, Leander, who drowned in the Wabash River when he was 18 years old. Copies of the book are available in the gift shop if you want to read it before the presentation. This event costs $5/person. To reserve your spot or for more information, call 260-563-9070.

“Ride Envelope” Testing Begins On Cheetah Hunt

With Track Construction Complete, Cars are Slowing Making Their Way Around

Wednesday, March 23, 2011 (Tampa, FL) – After bolting in the final piece of Cheetah Hunt’s 4,429’ track just last week, Busch Gardens’ design & engineering team are losing no time in getting the mega-attraction’s trains on the track for the first round of testing.

Yesterday, crews began the slow process of using cranes and pulleys to drag the car around the track. This initial testing is the park’s way of making sure the car glides smoothly along the entire length of the ride, as well as checking that the “ride envelope” – the space around the car and rider with arms fully extended – has plenty of clearance.

This drag testing will take an estimated 3 to 4 days to complete and is the first step to having Cheetah Hunt ready to pounce on Friday, May 27.

SeaWorld Orlando Thanks Florida Teachers with Free “Study Pass”

Pass includes unlimited admission for teachers plus big discounts for family and friends

ORLANDO, FL (March, 2011) – SeaWorld Orlando thanks teachers by offering a “Study Pass” to all active and certified K-12 grade school instructors.  It’s a free 2011 Fun Card allowing unlimited admission to SeaWorld Orlando now through year’s end, with no blackout dates.
For even more savings, until May 31, teachers can purchase up to six additional tickets at $20 off each admission, sharing the SeaWorld Orlando fun with family and friends.

More details can be found at SeaWorldOrlandoTeachers.com

The “Study Pass” is intended to be an inspiration, too. Whether it’s visiting Penguin Encounter to prepare for a classroom session on environmental issues in the southern hemisphere or riding Manta, the flying roller coaster, to help explain physics and gravity, the park’s experiences give teachers the unique opportunity to use their SeaWorld visit to help enhance their curriculum.
In fact, SeaWorldOrlandoTeachers.com is a starting point for teachers to learn about all SeaWorld has to offer.

Getting the “Study Pass” is easy. Teachers simply bring their Florida teaching certificate, recent paystub and photo ID to any ticket window at SeaWorld Orlando’s front gate. Right then, they can purchase discounted admission for family and friends.

“Sharing marine life knowledge with students is one of our core values,” said Terry Prather, SeaWorld Orlando’s president.  “At SeaWorld Orlando alone, more than 100,000 students pass through our camp and field trip programs every year.  We know how important a strong educational foundation is for our youth and we want to thank teachers for their years of devotion and passion.”

SeaWorld – through fun and affordable educational programs – has helped schools, teachers, children and adults explore the ocean environment and all its inhabitants. In one year alone, the park’s award-winning education programs included 600,000+ hours of structured teaching, and reached more than half a million people. In addition to that remarkable figure are the countless informal teaching experiences inside the parks including educators, show and exhibit narrations, and interpretive and interactive graphics.

The parks also host one of the largest and most-used animal databases on the Internet.  SeaWorld.org features more than 4,000 pages of zoological, ecological and conservation-minded material, including species reference sources, classroom curriculum, conservation project calls-to-action, career information and environmentally focused family activities.

SPRING INTO BUSCH GARDENS ON MARCH 26

36th Season Features Rejuvenated Oktoberfest, New Shows And Dining Options
Online Ticket Offer Lets Guests Bring A Friend For Free

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (March 22, 2011) – It must be spring: the flowers are blooming, the birds are singing and Busch Gardens is opening to another exciting year Saturday.

“This year is going to be one of our best,” said Park President Carl Lum. “We’re offering guests extraordinary values, new entertainment and heart-pounding thrills.”
The fun begins when a team of chef-inspired musicians cook up fabulous fun in the debut of Mix It Up!, a new show in Italy’s Il Teatro di San Marco. Exciting sounds fill the air daily as Busch Gardens’ amazing musicians perform some of Italy’s most popular songs. Watch the plot thicken as our crazy chefs and waiters compete to serve up their musical menu. It’s a fast-paced feast for the ears and the eyes.

Also this spring, a special fluffy guest is calling Busch Gardens home. The Easter Bunny is hopping into town beginning March 26 through Easter Sunday for exciting photo opportunities and appearances at Der Marktplatz, situated in the park’s rejuvenated Oktoberfest village. The village has been transformed and now features a new pretzel bakery, additional games and a new performance space, all of which capture the look and feel of a traditional Oktoberfest celebration.
Guests will notice a few more changes in the rejuvenated Oktoberfest village, including the relocation of Der Katapult. The scrambler-style ride, known now as Le Catapult, has moved to the New France section of the park. In its place is the massive new spire known as Mäch Tower, a nearly 240-foot-tall tower ride that is set to open later this spring.

For guests looking to spend time at the park with a friend, Busch Gardens recently announced an offer for Virginia residents unlike any other in the park’s 36-year history. Virginia residents who purchase a single-day ticket online at www.buschgardens.com/friendforfree can receive a second ticket free. The Bring a Friend for Free promotion is a great way for friends and families to experience all the park has to offer – together.

CHANGE IS IN THE WIND FOR CALIFORNIA CONDOR CONSERVATION

CHANGE IS IN THE WIND FOR CALIFORNIA CONDOR CONSERVATION
First Two Chicks of the 2011 Season Hatch at San Diego Zoo Safari Park

An exceptional sighting was caught on video at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park as a California condor chick hatched last week with the assistance of its parents. In years past, the practice of the California Condor Recovery Program was to hand raise the first egg laid by a condor pair, but the conservation program's goals are changing. Today, more condor eggs laid are being left with the parents so they can raise and mentor the chicks.
Two chicks have already hatched at the Safari Park this year, on March 14 and 16 respectively, and each is being raised by its parents. Two other eggs are in incubators. Whether raised by parents or by zookeepers using puppets, all condor chicks are candidates for release in Arizona, California or Baja California, Mexico.
Since the recovery program began in the 1980s - when there were only about 22 condors left in the world - the Park has hatched 165 chicks and released 80 birds in the wild. There are now more than 370 condors, and the number is growing as eggs are laid and hatched at the breeding centers at the Safari Park, Los Angeles Zoo, World Center for Birds of Prey, and Oregon Zoo. Eggs have been laid in the wild as well.
In addition, in 2011 the breeding centers are exchanging eggs to increase the gene pool of each population. One week ago, two condors that hatched and fledged at the Safari Park last year were sent to Arizona for release.

A California condor egg hatches after 56 days of incubation. The emerging chick hatches with white down and a light pink bald head. When the chick fledges at 6 months old, it is fully grown with black-and-white feathers and a black head. When it reaches maturity, the bird's head turns pink once again.
The California Condor Recovery Program is implemented by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, zoos in the U.S. and Mexico, and U.S. and Mexican government agencies. Although listed by the federal government as an endangered species in 1967, the California condor population continued to decline, reaching a critical low of less than two dozen birds. In 1982, the condor breeding program was successfully established at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and Los Angeles Zoo. Today, two additional breeding centers are assisting with the recovery of the species at The Peregrine Fund's World Center for Birds of Prey and the Oregon Zoo. In addition, condors are part of an education program that allows guests at the San Diego Zoo, Santa Barbara Zoo and Mexico City's Chapultepec Zoo to see North America's largest bird up close.

The Harley Show Ends in the FUTURE, Not the Past

Happy (very nearly) Spring!

It has been a busy time here at the Museum as we have been preparing to open our BRAND NEW EXHIBIT! Historic Harleys: The Antique Motorcycles of Brandt’s Harley-Davidson opened Tuesday to rave reviews. Haven’t had a chance to see it yet? We’ve got some upcoming events that would be the perfect opportunity to do so!

Historic Harleys: The Antique Motorcycles of Brandt’s Harley-Davidson

Now through January 7, 2012

The exhibit contains several antique and collectible Harley-Davidsons, most of them carefully restored by Brandt’s. The oldest bike in the collection is a 1910 single cylinder. Also on display are artifacts from the store, which was opened in 1949 by Waldo Brandt. You’ve never seen our Gallery looking like this! Even if you THINK that you aren’t interested in motorcycles, come and have a look. You’ll find the bikes to be works of art, each with a unique story. Don’t miss it!

Special thanks to Brandt’s Harley-Davidson for all of their efforts and to our sponsors, First Merchants Bank, without whom none of this would have been possible.

Though Pamela's irascible father intensely dislikes Laddie and his parents, hero and heroine manage to keep romance alive with the help of Laddie's hero-worshipping kid sister.

We hope to see you at the Museum soon!

Last Section Of Cheetah Hunt Track Installed at Busch Gardens

With the Tightening of A Few Final Bolts, the Cheetah Hunt Track is Complete

Tuesday, March 15, 2011 (Tampa, FL) – Construction crews worked into the evening on Monday to install the final piece of track that completes Cheetah Hunt’s epic 4,429-foot run – a record length among Busch Gardens Tampa’s coasters. The final section, which completes the “jump” over the Skyride’s cables, was bolted into place just before 9:30 p.m.

Even with the completion of the track, however, the work is far from over in preparing the new mega-attraction for its May 27th grand opening. Crews will spend the next two months finishing the intricate sculpting – or “theming” – of the coasters’ surrounding architecture.

Construction also continues on innovative Cheetah Run habitat, which will house more than a dozen of the highly endangered cats and offer guests unique opportunities to get up-close and witness a cheetah’s speed first-hand during daily sprints.

SAN DIEGO ZOO GLOBAL JOINS EFFORT TO CONSERVE THE AMAZONIAN RAIN FOREST THROUGH PERU FIELD STATION

San Diego Zoo Global will play a key role in helping to conserve the Amazonian rain forest by taking on management responsibility for a conservation and research station located in the Manu Biosphere Reserve in Peru. This will be the first South American-based field station for the San Diego Zoo and marks a significant extension of its commitment to the region.

Manu National Park is located in the western Amazon and is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and, as such, is protected as a biosphere preserve. It is one of the most biodiverse lowland tropical forests in the world and is considered one of the most pristine ecosystems on the planet.
"Cocha Cashu Biological Station, which is part of the Manu Biosphere Reserve, represents a significant expansion of our conservation efforts," said Allison Alberts, Ph.D., chief conservation and research officer for San Diego Zoo Global. "We are inheriting a legacy of inestimable value and look forward to the challenge of understanding and conserving the unique and important biodiversity of Manu."
Through the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation ResearchTM , San Diego Zoo Global currently manages field programs in more than 35 countries around the world. The new Peruvian-based station will be an important addition to the organization's existing conservation research stations, including three field stations in Cameroon's Ebo Forest, a California condor release site in Mexico, endangered bird breeding centers in Hawaii and San Clemente Island, and the Desert Tortoise Conservation Center in Nevada.
Encompassing almost 6,000 square miles, the Manu Biosphere Reserve is protected as a national park by the Peruvian Department of Protected Areas in the Ministry of Environment. San Diego Zoo Global, which will officially take over management of the field station at the
beginning of summer, will be working with an existing team of Peruvian scientists in a collaborative effort to develop conservation science-based projects that study the many high-profile species that live in the Amazonian ecosphere.

"Manu is unrivaled in its biodiversity," said Ron Swaisgood, Ph.D., director of applied animal ecology at the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation ResearchTM.  "This project will allow us to expand our conservation efforts and develop partnerships with some of the key organizations and scientists working in the area."
The Park is estimated to be home for more than 1,000 bird species, 200 species of reptiles and amphibians, 125 species of mammals and 40 species of fish. Living in the area of the field station are such rare and charismatic species as jaguars, giant river turtles, Goeldi's monkeys, black caimans, lowland tapirs, and giant river otters. The only human inhabitants of the region are indigenous groups including the Machigenga tribe and five other tribes that remain "uncontacted" by Western society.
