San Diego Zoo Safari Park Guests Can See 10-Day-Old Cub Playing in the Animal Care Center

     Kiburi, a 10-day-old cheetah cub, opened his eyes today at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's Animal Care Center.  He took in the world, gobbled down a bottle, played for a little while, and then went back fast asleep in the window of the nursery.
     Safari Park guests can see the 1.4-pound bundle of fur in the nursery's window. While he sleeps between 20 and 22 hours a day, he gets a bottle of special formula every 2 ½ hours and also has taken to playing with an adorable ferociousness.
     Of the 134 cheetahs born at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, Kiburi, which means proud in Swahili, is the first to be born to two hand-raised parents, Makena and Quint. Makena gave birth to two cubs on Nov. 14, but the first one died shortly after birth of unknown causes. She then showed signs of abandoning Kiburi, who was taken to the Park's nursery. (It is common for cheetah mothers to abandon a single cub because there is a high mortality rate in cheetah cubs and spending the energy to raise just one is not in her best interest.)
     At the nursery, Kiburi began "purring from Day 1," said senior nursery keeper Sandy Craig.
     "Kiburi really loves his bottle," Craig said, "as soon as he gets a taste of the milk he scarfs it down, then, soon after, he goes back to sleep."
     The 1,800-acre San Diego Zoo Safari Park (historically referred to as Wild Animal Park) is operated by the not-for-profit San Diego Zoo and includes a 900-acre native species reserve. The organization focuses on conservation and research work around the globe, educates millions of individuals a year about wildlife and maintains accredited horticultural, animal, library and photo collections. The Zoo also manages the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research. TADPOLE RELEASE INTENDED TO BOLSTER ENDANGERED POPULATION

University of California, San Diego Zoo, State and Federal Agencies Work to Increase Mountain Yellow-Legged Frog Population in So. Calif.

Endangered tadpoles were released into a stream near Idyllwild, Calif., today (Nov. 23, 2010) with hopes that the Southern California population of the mountain yellow-legged frog Rana muscosa will thrive again.

This is the second release of tadpoles into the same stream at the University of California James San Jacinto Mountains Reserve in Riverside County, which is part of the University of California Natural Reserve System. The release was done in collaboration with partners including the U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the California Department of Fish and Game, and the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research.

The initial reintroduction effort of this species occurred in April 2010 when about 500 eggs were released into the stream in hopes of successful hatching. The tadpoles from that release of eggs are so small that it has been difficult for scientists to determine how many survived.

The first-ever tadpole reintroduction for the species occurred in August. By “head starting” the tadpoles, partners hoped to increase survival in the wild. The release was conducted using both caged and free-swimming tadpoles. Eighteen tadpoles were released immediately into the stream while another 18 were put into a cage in the stream; the cage protected the tadpoles from predators and also allowed researchers to feed them. Each grouping was tagged with a different color marker. All 18 tadpoles in the cage survived the three-month period of reintroduction into the stream and were about 50 to 60 millimeters long (1 to 2½ inches) when they were released from the cage today. In the spring, scientists will go back to the stream and count the tadpoles to determine which of the release methods was most successful.

 “The experiments will help us to determine the most successful way to re-populate Southern California creeks with the highly endangered mountain yellow-legged frog,” said Frank Santana, research technician for the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research, where the tadpoles were bred. “The initial success that we have had with tadpole survival is very encouraging, but the real test will be how many tadpoles survived through the harsh winter.”

The creek is frequently monitored and some of the free-swimming tadpoles from the August release have been spotted during these efforts.

“When I survey the creek I am constantly on the lookout for the tadpoles,” said Becca Fenwick, director of the James San Jacinto Mountains Reserve. “I am excited for the day when I come upon my first full-grown mountain yellow-legged frog, a species that once thrived throughout Southern California.”

Globally, amphibians are on the decline because of habitat loss, effects of climate change, pesticide residue, introduction of nonnative species, and the spread of a deadly pathogen called the chytrid fungus. The mountain yellow-legged frog is one of three frogs or toads on the federal endangered species list in Southern California and has recently been proposed for listing under the California Endangered Species Act. Today, only a small wild population of less than 200 adult mountain yellow-legged frogs can be found in the San Gabriel, San Bernardino, and San Jacinto mountains.

The San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research was the first to breed the mountain yellow-legged frog outside of its native habitat.  Historically, scientists have had great difficulty breeding frogs in laboratories. This year, Zoo scientists discovered that the frogs’ breeding behaviors increased in the lab after the frogs were chilled to temperatures that resembled their high mountain stream environment.  Scientists hope the second year of breeding will result in an even higher fertility rate.

The Zoo’s breeding program, in conjunction with its partners, began after a wildlife biologist with the San Bernardino National Forest noticed declining creek water levels in Dark Canyon in Riverside County in 2006. The Fish and Wildlife Service’s salvage effort started the next day. Recovered tadpoles were taken to the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research, where they metamorphosed into frogs.

PANDAMONIUM STRIKES AS CUB AND MOTHER ENJOY NEW TOYS

Giant panda cub Yun Zi and his 19-year-old mother, Bai Yun, were like two kids in a candy shop at the San Diego Zoo on Friday. After more than two weeks of renovations, the pair returned to the Giant Panda Research Station habitat to find new scents, new logs to climb, and a great big pile of dirt to roll in.

     "This should be called the black bear exhibit," exclaimed an onlooker. "Look, I'm a grizzly," joked someone else.
     Admittedly, after five minutes of wrestling in a fresh pile of soil that was deliberately placed in the center of the exhibit by keepers, Yun Zi and Bai Yun looked more like their bear cousins than a critically endangered species from China.
     Other new items in the panda exhibits are Chinese elm trees, shrubs and sod, thanks to donors to the Zoo's "animal care wish list," an online shopping list created by keepers of enrichment items to keep animals stimulated and healthy. Items on the list range from $5 to $5,000. The current list is seeking enrichment items for birds.

     Panda exploration continued when even momma bear tested the new climbing structures by hanging upside down while reaching toward her 1-year-old cub. Yun Zi raced up and down the logs, sliding head first and then backward.

     "I haven't seen Bai Yun play like that in years," said Kathy Hawk, San Diego Zoo senior keeper. "Yun Zi is going to sleep for days."

KNOTT’S INVITES FAMILIES TO ROCK ON! RIDE ON! THIS NEW YEAR’S EVE

    BUENA PARK, Calif. – Knott’s Berry Farm will have something for the entire family this New Year’s Eve with a variety of dance music, a hypnotist, a Beatles tribute band and a special performance by Terri Nunn and Berlin.  All this plus Knott’s rides, attractions and a Midnight Mayhem Pyrotechnic Show in Calico Square will make Knott’s Rock On! Ride On! New Year’s Eve the place to ring in 2011.
    Headlining the evening will be Terri Nunn and Berlin.  80’s superstars Terri Nunn and Berlin reached international fame with hits “No More Words,” “The Metro” and “Take My Breath Away.” The group will be performing at Knott’s Calico Square for two performances during the event.  For those who love the music of the 60’s, Beatles tribute band Abbey Road will be performing in Knott’s Wagon Camp.

Wild Adventures Receives International Industry Honors

Park Named Finalist at International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions Expo 2010

Valdosta, GA – Wild Adventures Theme Park received international attention as a finalist for the Brass Ring Awards at the annual International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) Expo in Orlando, Florida this week.  The park’s brochure was one of three attractions recognized in the print advertisement category for class three facilities.  This is the first IAAPA honor for Wild Adventures Theme Park and comes on the heels of the park’s Wave Review Award from the World Waterpark Association.

“We are honored to be recognized by IAAPA as a finalist for this international award, commented Linda Jensen, vice president of marketing.  “Being up against theme parks and attractions from across the world makes this honor particularly meaningful for us.”   Overall, Herschend Family Entertainment properties were named finalists in 13 categories, winning six awards.

LEGOLAND® Florida Construction Recycling

From Concrete to Palm Trees - Park Reuses Assets

POLK COUNTY, FL (November 18, 2010) – LEGOLAND® Florida is preventing 18,000 tons of concrete slab from entering Florida’s landfills by crushing the existing sidewalks and foundation into stones and powder.  The Park has contracted with an outside company to operate a 15 ton machine to “chew up” concrete and sort it into several different sized bits.  Once crushed, the gravel will be re-used in the Park as a base layer for the new sidewalks thorough Central Florida’s newest full-day family theme park.

“It’s important to us at LEGOLAND Florida to make as little environmental impact as we build Central Florida’s newest full-day family theme park,” said General Manager of LEGOLAND Development, John Ussher.  “By recycling and reusing the concrete already on the property, we’re not only saving 18,000 tons of slab from area landfills, but doing what’s right for our business.”

Other ways the Park is reusing assets is with tree restoration and relocation.  660 oaks and palm trees from the property’s former adventure park area have been moved to an alternate location for the duration of construction.  Once the diggers and back-hoes have completed their job, the trees will be relocated to their new home in LEGOLAND.

ROCKETTES KICK OFF THE HOLIDAYS AT LEGOLAND® CALIFORNIA

CARLSBAD, Calif. (Nov. 17, 2010) — Members of the world famous Radio City Rockettes danced their way into LEGOLAND® California today to help kick off the holidays! The Rockettes lent a hand to the Park’s Master Model Builders by placing the finishing touches on the LEGOLAND Christmas tree in preparation for the Park’s annual tree lighting ceremony.

The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Drive at Knott’s runs Dec. 4-19, 2010 only.  The collected toys will be distributed by U.S. Marine Corps Reserve personnel to disadvantaged children throughout Southern California.  The annual program is part of a nationwide U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program.  Knott’s Berry Farm is one of the largest collection sites for Toys for Tots in Southern California collecting over 630,000 toys over the years.

A visit to Knott’s Merry Farm is a wonderful way to celebrate the holiday season with your family.  The Park, which has been transformed into a spectacular winter wonderland, includes activities for the whole family including a colorful Christmas parade and a spectacular holiday ice show.

UNPRECEDENTED ART PROJECT SUPPORTS SAN DIEGO ZOO'S HAWAII ENDANGERED BIRD CONSERVATION PROGRAM

Artist Dedicates Four Years to Create Audubon-style Paintings of Hawaiian Birds

     There are only 37 endemic Hawaiian bird species left on Earth. The San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research is working to prevent the extinction of the remaining Hawaiian native birds with a captive care, breeding and reintroduction project called the Hawaii Endangered Bird Conservation Program. These birds are integral elements of Hawaiian cultural heritage as well as the ecology of the islands.

     Hawaiian birds are also the focus of wildlife artist Marian Berger, who has been referred to as the "Audubon of Hawaii" at galleries where her work is exhibited. In "Mea Makamae: Hawaiian Bird Watercolors," Berger has captured the beauty and essence of the 37 avian species in 33 paintings. Her original watercolors are double elephant size and are painted in the style of naturalist John James Audubon. The originals are available for purchase exclusively through the San Diego Zoo until Jan. 8, 2011.

     The Volcano Art Center in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will host an exhibition of the entire collection from Jan. 8 through March 6, 2011. The paintings also will be reproduced as investment-quality giclees. Only 250 complete sets of the full-size (26" x 39.5") reproductions will be issued.
   
     Berger was born in Limerick, Ireland.  She spent her early childhood on Wake Island in the Pacific Ocean and in Alaska. It was in these environments where she acquired her father's love of science, her mother's artistic bent, and her parents' mutual love of the outdoors. She graduated with a degree in wildlife management from Humboldt State University and moved to the Big Island of Hawaii in 1976. During her 35-year career as an artist, Berger has received numerous awards and commissions for her wildlife art.

     Berger, and the anonymous donor who commissioned the work, have pledged the entire collection for the benefit of Hawaii's endangered birds. The funds raised through the sales of Berger's art will go to San Diego Zoo Global to support the Hawaii Endangered Bird Conservation Program.  This program is a collaboration of the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the State of Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife, the U.S Geological Survey Biological Resources Discipline and private landowners, including Kamehameha Schools. The conservation program comprises two captive breeding facilities - the Keauhou and Maui bird conservation centers - and has a number of field sites around Hawaii.

EARN YOUR WINGS DURING VETERANS DAY WEEKEND AT SAN DIEGO ZOO

Flight is a skill mastered by birds, the military and… you? Now through Sunday, visitors to the San Diego Zoo can celebrate the art of flight and Veteran's Day while earning their own wings during Mission Fed's Discovery Days: Festival of Flight, a four-day event filled with fun activities as well as facts about wildlife and conservation.

     Watch birds in flight or try flying during trapeze class! Get up close during animal encounters, watch an amazing aerial feeding frenzy, use your bird brain during a scavenger hunt or stop in to talk to conservation biologists to learn more about birds.

      Did you know a California condor can glide on its 9-foot wingspan without much flapping? This endangered species can reach heights of as much as 15,000 feet on thermal air currents. Who else can compete with these aerial feats? The military can!

      Help celebrate Veteran's day by visiting the military booth to meet fearless flyers of today as they share stories and prepare for next year's Century of Naval Aviation celebration. Learn about space flight and the men and women who forged aerospace history with the San Diego Air and Space Museum. Then climb aboard the USS Midway Museum's cockpit and check out the vintage engine waiting for restoration. Kids can try on a flight suit, helmet and more.

     For the brave who are all aflutter to "fly," the Zoo is offering four daily flying trapeze classes. Or try a bird-themed VIP tour. There is a possibility of feeding birds some special snacks. The VIP tour and trapeze class each cost $69 per person.

U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE AND SAN DIEGO ZOO SIGN COLLABORATIVE AGREEMENT TO SAVE SPECIES

Today, Thursday, November 11, officials representing the San Diego Zoo and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service formalized a partnership to work together to save endangered species.  In a small ceremony near the Zoo’s famous giant panda exhibit, key representatives signed a memorandum of understanding designed to set the stage for expanded efforts in the future.

“Our two organizations have worked together for many years to preserve and recover endangered species populations,” said Douglas Myers, CEO for San Diego Zoo.  “Today we are recognizing this history of collaboration and pledging our joint efforts to halt extinction in the future.”

By working together cooperatively, the two conservation organizations hope to combine resources and expertise in a way that will leverage the strengths of both organizations.

"There is little we can do in the field of conservation without partnering," said Benjamin N. Tuggle, regional director for the Southwest region of the Fish and Wildife Service. "Agreements such as the one signed today set the stage for big strides in conservation of species throughout the Southwest."

In a study recently published in Science magazine, conservation programs are credited with helping to recover 64 endangered species, including the California condor.   San Diego Zoo and U.S. Fish and Wildlife officials point to the recovery program for this critically endangered bird species as a model for successful programs in the future.

“Although extinction continues to be a serious threat for many species, we believe we can save many of these species through proactive efforts at preservation and recovery,” said Allison Alberts, chief conservation and research officer for San Diego Zoo Global.  “We hope that this collaborative initiative will set the stage for more successful programs such as those we have been involved with for the mountain yellow-legged frog, Hawaiian forest birds, and the desert tortoise.”

WHAT:                      When Barbara Emde and her children, Tyler (17) and Caroline (15) arrived at Universal Orlando Resort to experience The Wizarding World of Harry Potter they were invited to tour the new area with Mark Woodbury, President of Universal Creative – one of the creative minds that brought The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to life. Woodbury toured them through Hogsmeade, where they tasted treacle fudge and Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans, sipped Butterbeer and got fitted for a wand at Ollivanders wand shop.

The family also walked the halls of Hogwarts castle with Woodbury and the group experienced Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey – the marquee attraction located within Hogwarts castle – together. Worlds of Fun Increases 2011 Capital Investment to Over $8 Million

KANSAS CITY, Mo. − Worlds of Fun, the Midwest’s premier amusement park, announces additional capital projects for the 2011 season, highlighted by a complete restoration and installation of one of the world's most famous carousels, a new catering pavilion, and the previously announced Planet Snoopy.

In 1926, M.C. Illions meticulously carved 64 jumping horses and two chariots to create the Illions Supreme carousel, the most famous and reproduced carousel in the world. Known for their all wood horses with high swept manes adorned with jewels, only five original Supreme models were ever built by Illions. When installed at Worlds of Fun this spring, the carousel will be one of only two operating in the world.

Illions built the ride in 1926 for the Sesqui-Centennial Celebration held in Philadelphia. In 1927, it was moved to Birmingham, Alabama, and in the 1930's moved to Coney Island be restored. The carousel operated at Geauga Lake in Aurora, Ohio, from 1937 to 2007, and now has been painstakingly detailed to its original condition by Carousel Works, Inc, Mansfield, Ohio, the largest manufacturer of carousels in the world. Guests will be able to watch the full restoration and installation of this beautiful ride in its entirety on 'Ultimate Restorations" (www.urtvshow.com).

To make way for the new carousel, Festhaus, the park's largest catering facility, will be removed and rebuilt as a brand new permanent structure in 2011. This new group outing pavilion will be able to handle groups into the thousands as well as multiple events simultaneously.

The new carousel and Festhaus areas are a $2 million capital investment, and join the $6 million Planet Snoopy investment for 2011. As previously announced, the world’s most popular beagle's new home will boast six new rides all themed around the PEANUTS characters. Little ones and their families can take a trip around Planet Snoopy on new car and truck rides, a giant balloon tower ride, teacups, or hop in a new spinning tug-boat. Over 20 rides, shows, and attractions will great the whole family in 2011 inside the all new Planet Snoopy.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay Animals Enjoy Carved Pumpkins for Halloween

The animals in Busch Gardens’ Edge of Africa enjoyed carved pumpkins during the week leading up to Halloween. Different treats that appeal to each animal were placed inside the gourds. Lions and hyenas were tempted by meat. Ring-tailed lemurs sought grapes, while meerkats were after mealworms. Hippos love fruit, but Kita enjoyed playing with the buoyant pumpkin for a few minutes before smashing it and eating it. Busch Gardens zookeepers used the seasonal fruit as enrichment for the animals and to vary their diets. Enrichment items such as food and toys are used daily by the zoo team to keep the animals engaged and stimulated, both mentally and physically. SeaWorld Orlando Welcomes Rehabilitated Manatee Home

ORLANDO, Fla., November 4, 2010 -– The package picked up by SeaWorld’s animal care experts at Orlando International Airport on Tuesday, November 2, was indeed precious cargo.  It was Holly, a rehabilitated manatee, who was rescued in 1995, and has been rehabilitating at Columbus Zoo and Aquarium for the past five years.

Holly was rescued 15 years ago after she was found trapped at the Port St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant on Hutchinson Island.  When she arrived at SeaWorld she received hands-on, critical care for cold stress at SeaWorld’s Manatee Rehabilitation Facility.  After six months, she was moved to Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park and then later transferred to Columbus Zoo and Aquarium to complete her rehabilitation.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services (USFWS) is the Federal agency that creates plans for each manatee that is rescued and cared for in Florida and the surrounding states.  In order to create space at SeaWorld Orlando for more critically injured manatees, USFWS moved Holly to a long-term rehabilitation facility.

Holly is set to be returned to the wild in early 2011.

“Caring for Holly 15 years ago was extremely rewarding,” said Randy Runnells, SeaWorld Animal Care Assistant Curator.  “It's great to know the initial care we provided has helped her reach this point in her life. We're looking forward to returning her back to the wild next year."

SeaWorld’s animal rescue team is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to save injured, abandoned and orphaned animals, including manatees, dolphins, whales, birds and turtles. To date this year, the park has rescued 24 and released 16 manatees.

TIGER HOUSE TEETHING WITH EXCITEMENT OVER BABY ANIMALS

Even before you arrive inside the tiger house at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park you can hear the sounds of little mouths yelping and chuffing with excitement. Two Sumatran tigers were born on Oct. 5 and are now becoming more active.

     On Friday, the two female cubs were roused from their slumber by their keepers, Lori Gallo and Tina Hunter, for a quick weigh-in and some socialization time. The 10- and 9-pound cubs are being desensitized to the human touch in anticipation of vaccines or other necessary veterinary care. It also allows keepers to check if the cubs are teething. On Thursday, keepers discovered the cubs' canines are emerging.

     The cubs are described as clumsy on their feet. Keepers expect them to be more agile and be ready to explore the outdoors in mid-January.

     Sumatran tigers are a critically endangered species, with only about 400 cats left worldwide. They are the smallest of the tiger species, but a male can reach 220 pounds. The Park is currently home to seven Sumatran tigers, but 23 have been born here.
   
     The Safari Park is raising funds to build a forested tiger haven that will offer up-close views of these fascinating felines and other wildlife as well as highlight conservation efforts. For more information visit sandiegozoo.org/tigers.

     The 1,800-acre San Diego Zoo Safari Park (historically referred to as Wild Animal Park) is operated by the not-for-profit San Diego Zoo and includes a 900-acre native species reserve. KNOTT’S MERRY FARM INVITES EVERYONE TO “A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS”

(November 2010) – Knott’s Berry Farm will be filled with the magic of the season this year as it transform into Knott’s Merry Farm and celebrates “A Charlie Brown Christmas” with seasonal entertainment, spectacular decorations including a 65 foot tall Christmas tree, and a colorful Christmas parade starting Thanksgiving day and running through December 30, 2010.

Also in the spirit of the season, Knott’s Merry Farm is proud to present the ice spectacular, “It’s Christmas, Snoopy!”  The show, performed in the 2,100-seat Charles M. Schulz Theatre, is hosted by the famous skating Beagle and features Knott’s ensemble skaters, dazzling sets, colorful costumes and plenty of surprises.   “It’s Christmas, Snoopy!” will be presented November 25-28; December 3-5, 10-12, 17-21 and 23-24, 26-28, 30-31, 2010 and January 1-2, 2011.

Knott’s 1880s Ghost Town will again be transformed into Knott’s Christmas Crafts Village, inviting mall-weary guests to explore one-of-a-kind treasures created by more than 100 artisans in a Victorian holiday wonderland of strolling carolers, musical groups, community choirs and lavish holiday decorations.

Fairytale Town Participates
as donation site for News 10's Coats for Kids

Beginning on Thursday, November 4, Fairytale Town will accept coats for the News 10's Coats for Kids, serving as an official drop-off site. To help inspire the spirit of giving for children and families, Fairytale Town will offer one free child's admission per coat, with a paying adult.  The collection will run from November 4 through November 28, 2010, during operating hours. The collected coats will then be delivered to the News 10 Station.

The News 10's Coats for Kids drive is celebrating 20 years of collecting coats to help families in the Sacramento area.  The News 10's Coats for Kids drive asks for a donation of new or gently used coats.  Over the last 19 years donors have helped collect and distribute more than 475,000 coats to children and families in need.  The News 10's Coats for Kids goal this year is 25,000 donations to make it to the ONE HALF MILLION mark!
 
"The News 10's Coasts for Kids drive is a great program, and we are happy to serve as an official drop-off location and extend free admission to encourage participation and donations," said Sharlene Lal-Hernandez, Education & Program Manager.

Coats can also be dropped off at Swansons Cleaners, Rogers Jewelry Co., Century 21 M&M and Associates, or the News 10 Studios.

The International Café, New Universal Studios Hollywood Restaurant Wins Santé Restaurant Award for Innovation and Culinary Achievement

Universal City CA, October 29, 2010 --Universal Studios Hollywood’s new restaurant, The International Café, has been honored with a prestigious Santé Restaurant Award for innovation and outstanding achievement in culinary service and hospitality.

            Now in its 13th year, the Santé Awards program is the only peer-judged national restaurant and hospitality competition in North America.  Of the restaurants recognized with awards this year, The International Café is the only establishment located within a theme park.

            The International Café opened earlier this year to provide theme park guests with healthy food choices in a casual, unhurried European bistro-style setting.

The menu includes creative salads, cheese plates and healthy artisanal sandwiches, along with juices, mineral waters and many other food options suitable for a relaxed, sit-down or on-the-go meal for hungry theme park guests.

            “Dining is an important part of the experience we provide at Universal Studios Hollywood and we want to ensure that our guests have choices that fit their tastes and their lifestyles,” said Eric Kopelow, Universal Studios Hollywood Executive Chef.  “The International Café is helping us to satisfy a growing demand for healthy, tasty food options.”  A graduate of New York’s Culinary Institute of America, Kopelow designed The International Café’s innovative menu.

            Sample menu choices include a shrimp cobb and Greek salad, a grilled vegetable sandwich with gorgonzola cheese, a turkey with muenster cheese and arugula sandwich, a roast beef and brie with roasted pears sandwich and a “caprese-style” plate featuring heirloom tomatoes with mozzarella and basil.  Located adjacent to the theme park’s “Streets of the World” film locations, which re-create European streets and plazas, The International Café offers indoor and al fresco seating.

            The Santé Awards were created to recognize excellence in restaurant food, wine, spirits and service hospitality.  Award winners represent a broad spectrum of restaurants and industry professionals.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay Animals Enjoy Carved Pumpkins for Halloween

The animals in Busch Gardens’ Edge of Africa enjoyed carved pumpkins during the week leading up to Halloween. Different treats that appeal to each animal were placed inside the gourds. Lions and hyenas were tempted by meat. Ring-tailed lemurs sought grapes, while meerkats were after mealworms. Hippos love fruit, but Kita enjoyed playing with the buoyant pumpkin for a few minutes before smashing it and eating it. Busch Gardens zookeepers used the seasonal fruit as enrichment for the animals and to vary their diets. Enrichment items such as food and toys are used daily by the zoo team to keep the animals engaged and stimulated, both mentally and physically.
